This evening prayer for restful sleep is written for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and your mind will not slow down. Pray it at bedtime, sitting on the edge of the bed or lying down with the lamp off. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once you find your rhythm.

Evening Prayer for Restful Sleep

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I think about the conversations that went badly, the work I did not finish, and the worries I carried home with me. Some of them I can fix tomorrow, and some I cannot fix at all. Please take them from my hands tonight. I do not need to solve everything before I close my eyes.

Quiet my thoughts when they start racing. If my body is tense, loosen it, one part at a time, from my shoulders down to my feet. If my heart is heavy about someone I love, hold that person in your care while I rest. Let the noise of the day settle the way dust settles when the air is still.

Watch over me through the night. Guard the house, the people in it, and anyone who is awake right now because of pain, fear, or a long shift. Thank you for the good things from today, even the small ones, like a warm meal or a kind word. I trust you with the hours I cannot see. Give me sleep that refreshes me, and wake me in the morning ready for what you have prepared. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired, and I am ready to rest. Take the weight of this day off my shoulders and let my mind be still. Guard my sleep and the sleep of those I love. Thank you for being awake when I cannot be. Into your hands I commend my spirit, and I trust you with everything until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a plain statement of trust that you can pray as a declaration. Say the words slowly and let them remind you that rest is a gift God gives, not something you must earn by controlling every outcome.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the way anxiety keeps you working past your limits. Ask God to help you stop striving, and receive sleep as his provision for the people he loves.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when fear makes it hard to lie down. Remember the image of waking after a night of protection, and ask the Lord to sustain you in the same way while you sleep.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to Jesus as you pray this verse. Name the particular burdens you carry tonight, and ask him to exchange them for the rest he offers.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this passage as a way to hand each worry over in turn. Pray specifically about what keeps you awake, then ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time about thirty minutes before you plan to sleep, after the last screen has gone dark and before you turn off the light. Sit somewhere comfortable and keep something near you, such as a glass of water or a worn Bible, so your hands have something to rest on. Breathe slowly between sentences, and let the silence after each line be part of the prayer.

If you share a home, consider praying this together with a spouse, a child, or a roommate, taking turns reading the lines. You might also keep a notebook beside your bed and write down anything that comes to mind, so you can release it to God instead of replaying it in the dark. Return to this prayer on hard nights, and let it become the familiar words that signal to your body and soul that the day is over.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps Israel neither slumber nor sleep watch over you tonight. May your worries grow quiet and your body find the rest it needs. May you wake refreshed, knowing you were held through every hour of the dark.
