This prayer is for anyone looking for work, whether you have been applying for months, have just lost a position, or are starting out and not sure where the next door will open. It is best prayed at the start of your day, before you open the job boards or check your inbox, and again when you feel discouraged after a rejection. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the specific needs in front of you.

Prayer for Finding a Job

Lord, you know the search I am in. You know the applications I have sent, the emails that have gone unanswered, and the interviews that did not end the way I hoped. You know the bills on the table and the quiet worry that keeps me awake when the house is still dark. I bring all of it to you, because I cannot carry it well on my own.

Give me wisdom to know where to look and where to stop looking. Open the doors you want open and close the ones that would lead me away from your purpose for my life. Help me to present myself honestly and clearly, to recognize the skills you have given me, and to speak about them without pride or fear. Go before me into every conversation, every application, and every call I have been waiting for.

Keep my heart steady when the waiting feels long. Do not let me measure my worth by the number of replies in my inbox. Remind me that you provide for your people, and that my family and I are not forgotten. Give me patience, a good network of people who will pray with me, and the courage to keep going one step at a time. Thank you that I can bring this need to you today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need work and I need your help finding it. Show me the next step, give me clear thinking as I write and speak about what I can do, and open the right door at the right time. Steady me when I feel discouraged, and remind me that you see me and know what I need. Thank you that I am not searching alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes about anxiety in a way that fits a job search exactly. When the worry about rent and references starts to take over, pray these words as a handing-over: name each concern to God, then ask for the peace that goes beyond what you can understand.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you cannot see how a job will come together, this verse invites you to lean on God rather than on your own calculations. Pray it when you are tempted to chase every opening out of fear, and ask him to guide the paths you take.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

Jeremiah wrote to exiles who had lost their homes and livelihoods. Read it as a promise that God holds your future even when the present looks unemployed and uncertain, and pray it with trust that he has good purposes beyond your current search.

Matthew 6:31-33

31 “Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

Jesus speaks directly to worry about food, clothing, and daily provision. Pray this passage by naming your practical needs and then asking God to help you seek his kingdom first, trusting that your needs are known to him.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

This verse is a short, steady prayer for a long search. Commit your way to the Lord, the psalmist says, and then trust him to act. Pray it as a daily act of handing over your plans and your timing to God.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee before the day’s messages begin. Keep a notebook beside you and write down the specific companies, people, or opportunities you are asking God about. When a new application goes out or a reply comes in, return to the notebook and pray over that particular matter by name.

You might also keep your hands busy while you pray. Some people prayerfully update a résumé, write a cover letter, or walk around the block while they speak to God about each step. Ask a friend, a small group, or a church prayer team to pray with you on the days the search feels heaviest, and let them know specifically what you are asking for.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every room where you will speak about your work. May he open doors that no one can shut and close doors that were never meant for you. May he keep your heart patient, your mind clear, and your family held in his care until the right work finds you.
