This daily prayer is for the moments when a friend is struggling and you want to carry them before God without knowing exactly what to say. Pray it in the morning before the day gets loud, or in the evening when you are thinking about them. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for a Struggling Friend

Lord, you see my friend today in ways I cannot. You know the weight they are carrying, whether it is grief, worry about money, a marriage under strain, a diagnosis they have not told many people about, or a silence that has settled over them since something went wrong. I do not need to explain it all to you. You already know every detail, and you already love them more than I do.

I ask that you would be near them this morning. When they wake up and the problem is the first thing they remember, let them feel your presence before they feel the dread. Give them enough strength for the next hour, not the whole week. Where they feel alone, remind them that they are not. Where they are angry or ashamed, soften their heart and keep them from pulling away from the people who care about them.

Make me a faithful friend in this season. Give me patience when I do not know what to do, wisdom when I am tempted to offer quick answers, and the willingness to simply show up. Open the right doors for help, whether that is a doctor, a counselor, a church family, or a neighbor who brings soup. Thank you that you hold my friend steady, and that your faithfulness does not depend on how they feel today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my friend is struggling and I cannot fix it. Be close to them right now. Calm the fear, lift the heaviness, and remind them that you have not forgotten them. Give me the right words, or give me the grace to listen. Hold them in your hands until they can stand again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this for your friend when their heart feels broken. Ask God to draw near to them specifically, and to rescue them from the crushing sense that they have been left behind.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name God as the one place of refuge your friend can run to. Ask that they would sense his nearness even when they cannot see any way forward.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray Jesus’ invitation over your friend’s exhaustion. Ask that they would bring their burdens to him honestly, not waiting until they feel they have it together.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as a prayer that nothing in your friend’s situation can separate them from God’s love. Ask him to make that truth feel real to them today.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray that your friend would experience God as the Father of compassion, and that over time they would be able to comfort others with the comfort they received.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose one consistent time each day, such as while your coffee is brewing or on the drive to work, so the prayer becomes a habit rather than a rescue. If you can, write your friend’s name at the top of a note on your phone and read the prayer from there. Keeping your hands busy, like folding laundry or walking a loop around the block, can help your mind stay focused when your thoughts wander.

Consider inviting one other person to pray this with you, or to pray it for your friend on the days you feel too tired. Let them know specifically what your friend is facing so they can pray with real detail. Check in with your friend, too, not only with prayer but with a text or a visit when it fits what they need.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord hold your friend steady through this season and give them rest for their soul. May they feel the nearness of the one who is close to the brokenhearted, and may someone near them be a sign of that care. May the peace of God guard their heart and mind, one day at a time.
