This daily prayer is for the times when a friend’s worry is weighing on you, or when you know they are carrying fear they cannot set down. Pray it in the morning before the day starts, or in the evening when the house is quiet and their name is on your mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for an Anxious Friend

Father, you already know the things keeping my friend awake. You know the phone calls they dread, the bills stacked on the counter, the doctor’s appointment they keep replaying in their head, and the quiet fear that nothing will ever feel settled again. I bring all of it to you today. Please meet them in the places where their thoughts race ahead of what has actually happened, and bring their mind back to the present moment, to the next small step and the next breath.

Lord, steady their heart when it pounds for no clear reason. Give them sleep that is deep and real, and let the night hold them instead of the worry. Where they feel alone, remind them that you have not stepped away from them for a single moment. Give them someone safe to talk to, a friend who listens without rushing, and the courage to ask for help when they need it. Teach them, and me too, that you are not disturbed by our fears and that you invite us to bring them to you again and again.

Be near my friend today. Replace their fear with your peace, not as a feeling they must manufacture but as a gift you already hold out to them. We trust you with what they cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is anxious right now, and I do not have the words for all of it. You know exactly what they are facing. Calm their mind, slow their breathing, and remind them that you are with them in this moment. Give them the next small thing they can do, and give me the patience to stay close. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Pray this passage by naming each worry your friend has mentioned, one at a time, and asking God to guard their heart in place of the fear. Paul links prayer and thanksgiving with the peace that comes from God.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to picture your friend setting their burdens down into God’s hands. Ask him to help them believe that their cares are truly welcome with him.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

Pray this when your friend is afraid and cannot yet name a reason for it. Ask God to help them place their trust in him in the moment fear rises up.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly over your friend, letting the promise of God’s presence sink in. Ask him to strengthen them in the places where they feel weakest.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this for a friend who feels weary from carrying too much. Ask Jesus to draw them in and give them rest that reaches beyond sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find the morning the easiest time to pray for an anxious friend, before messages and news fill the day. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of something warm, and keep a hand resting on your lap or around the cup. Slow breathing while you read can help your own mind settle, which makes it easier to pray with a clear heart.

You do not have to pray alone. Consider asking another friend or a small group to pray the same words on the same day, and let your friend know you are doing it. Sometimes the simplest support is telling them, “I am praying for you today,” and then keeping that promise.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your friend in every uncertain step and walk beside them through every hard hour. May he give them peace that steadies the heart and rest that renews the body. May they know, even on the hardest days, that they are deeply loved and never forgotten.
