This prayer is for the leaders God has placed over us, from the officials who make decisions in our city and nation to the pastors, teachers, employers and family elders who shape daily life. Pray it each morning over coffee, on the drive to work, or during a quiet minute at lunch. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak to God in your own words about the people you have in mind.
Daily Prayer for Our Leaders
Lord, you are the one who sets up kings and governors, and you see every leader in every office, council room and family kitchen. I bring them to you today. Give them wisdom that goes deeper than polling numbers and quick headlines. When they face a decision that has no easy answer, let them slow down enough to ask you for direction. Guard them from pride when things go well and from despair when they go badly.
I pray for their families, because leaders carry their work home with them. Protect their marriages and their children. Give them rest that is real, not just a pause between meetings. Surround them with people who will tell them the truth, including the uncomfortable parts, and keep them from surrounding themselves only with people who agree. Help them remember that their authority is borrowed and that they will answer to you for how they used it.
Where leaders are tempted to act out of fear, anger or the hunger for approval, turn their hearts toward justice, mercy and honest work. Let the people they serve be treated fairly, especially those who have little voice. And let me not sit in judgment without also praying for them. Teach me to pray for leaders when I disagree with them, and to honor the office even when I question the choices. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I lift up our leaders to you right now. Grant them wisdom, humility and a clear conscience. Protect their families and give them rest, and keep them from pride and fear. Guide the decisions that will be made today, and let justice and mercy be seen in them. Help me to pray for them even when I disagree. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
1 Timothy 2:1-2

Paul asks that prayers, petitions and thanksgivings be offered for all people, and specifically for kings and everyone in high positions. Pray these verses by naming the leaders you know and asking God for peace and quiet lives for your community.
Proverbs 21:1
The king’s heart is in the LORD’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires.

This verse reminds you that even the most powerful leader’s heart is guided by the Lord. Pray it as a way of trusting that God is working in rooms you will never enter, and ask him to turn leaders’ hearts toward what is right.
Romans 13:1
Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God.

Paul teaches that authority is given by God. Use this verse to ask that leaders would govern well and that you would honor their God-given role, even when you find their conduct hard to accept.
Jeremiah 29:7
Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”
(WEB)
God told the exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived and to pray for it. Pray this verse for your own city and its leaders, asking that their wellbeing would become yours as well.
Psalm 72:1-2
1 God, give the king your justice; your righteousness to the royal son. 2 He will judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice.
(WEB)
This psalm is a prayer for a king to rule with righteousness and justice. Read it slowly and make it your request for leaders today: that they would judge the poor fairly and carry out justice with God’s own care.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a set time each day, perhaps when you first wake up or while you wait for your morning drink to brew. Keep a short list of two or three leaders on a note in your phone or on a card by the sink, so your prayers stay specific instead of drifting into vague good wishes. When the news brings a new crisis, come back to the same list and pray for those people by name.
If you pray with family or a small group, take turns reading one paragraph each, then let someone else name a leader they are concerned about. You might also pray this prayer with your hands open on your lap, a small sign that you are receiving God’s direction rather than trying to control the outcome. Over time, you may find your frustration softening into steady intercession.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give wisdom and steady courage to every leader who carries responsibility for others today. May he guard their families, deepen their humility and keep their hearts open to the people they serve. And may he bless you as you pray for them, giving you peace that does not depend on how the day unfolds.
