This daily prayer for the sick is written for anyone praying for someone whose body or mind is struggling, whether that is you, a family member, a friend, or a patient in your care. It works well first thing in the morning, before a hospital visit, or at the close of the day when the worry is loudest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and details only you know.

Daily Prayer for the Sick

Lord, you know every ache and every restless night that has settled into this house, and you know the one who is sick right now. Today I bring them to you as they are, with the pain that wakes them, the tiredness that follows them through the day, and the fear that visits when the lights go low. Be near their bed and near the people sitting beside it. Steady the hands of the doctors and nurses, give wisdom for every decision, and let the medicines do their work in the body you made.

Give them rest that actually restores, and give me patience when the progress is slow or invisible. Where healing is possible, I ask for it, and I trust your timing even when I cannot see it. Where it is not coming soon, meet them in the long middle, and help them not to feel abandoned there. Guard their thoughts from despair, and remind them, in ordinary moments, that they are known and loved. Let their family and friends be strengthened too, not just the one who is ill. Thank you that you hear this prayer before I finish it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I am worried for the one who is sick. Be with them right now, in this hour, in whatever room they are lying in. Ease their pain where you choose to ease it, and steady them where you do not. Give the caregivers strength and clear minds, and give me enough peace to take the next small step. Hold them, and hold us, until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request that the Lord would sustain the sick person when strength is gone. Name the specific weakness you see each day and ask God to be the one who holds them up through it.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring the wounds of the heart as well as the body before God. Speak the names of the hurts that rarely get said out loud, and ask him to bind them up.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly, then pray it back to God as a promise you are holding him to. Ask for courage for the one who is sick and for yourself as you care for them.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

This passage speaks of prayer offered in faith and of the church coming alongside the sick. Pray it for your community, asking that the people around this person would be willing to pray and to help.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the exhausted, the ones who have been fighting illness for months. Ask Jesus to give them the rest that comes from trusting him, not only the rest that comes from sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the phone is picked up and the day’s demands begin. Sit somewhere quiet, and if it is useful, hold a glass of water or the hand of the one you are praying for while you read. Keep a small notebook nearby so you can write down what you notice, whether it is a good night, a new symptom, or a moment of unexpected peace.

Invite someone else to pray it with you, either in person or over the phone. A spouse, a friend from church, or a family member who lives far away can each read a paragraph and then pause for silence. Praying together reminds you that you are not carrying this alone, and it gives the sick person the comfort of knowing many people are lifting them up.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless and keep the one who is sick, and may his face shine on them with grace and peace. May he be their strength when their own is spent, and may he surround them with people who love them well. May you, the one praying, find the strength to keep showing up, knowing that your faithfulness matters to God.
