This evening prayer is for anyone who is in the middle of a career change, whether you have just accepted a new role, are waiting on an answer, or are still weighing whether to leave what you know. Pray it before bed, when the day’s decisions are finished and the uncertainty feels heaviest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Evening Prayer for a Career Change

Father, the day is ending, and I bring you the work I could not finish and the choices I could not settle. I have been turning over this change again and again: the job I am leaving or hoping to leave, the new path I cannot yet see clearly, the money that has to stretch, and the people who depend on how I decide. Tonight I set down the need to have every answer. You know what lies ahead, even when I cannot see past the next week.

Thank you for the ways you have already carried me through this season. Thank you for the skills you have given me, for the conversations that opened doors, and for the small signs that kept me going when I doubted. Quiet my mind so that I can rest. Guard my sleep, and let my worry about tomorrow’s interview, paperwork, or meeting rest in your hands. Give me courage for the steps I must take and patience for the ones I cannot rush. Keep my family and the people I love safe tonight, and let them know your peace as well.

Lord, if this change is your will, make the way plain in your time, and if I am heading somewhere you have not chosen, turn me gently. Whatever comes, let my work be honest and my heart be steady. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my future feels uncertain. Calm my mind tonight and help me trust you with this career change. Show me the next faithful step, and let me sleep without carrying every outcome by myself. Keep watch over me until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, thanking God that rest does not depend on having your career decided. Ask him to let you sleep in safety even while the future is still unsettled.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure to work through every hour of the night. Ask God to remind you that he cares for you even when you are not striving.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Bring your own understanding of this change to God and ask him to direct your steps. Pray that you would trust him more than your plans and your fears.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Name each worry about your new role, income, or direction, and give it to God in prayer. Ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind when the day is over.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your weariness after a long season of transition. Ask God to renew your strength so you can keep going when the work feels draining.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet spot where you usually end the day, such as the edge of your bed, a chair by a lamp, or the kitchen table after the dishes are done. Before you begin, put your phone face down and take three slow breaths. You might hold a notebook nearby so you can jot down any job tasks or fears that surface, then leave them on the page and return to God.

You can also pray this with someone who is walking through the same change, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a mentor. Take turns reading the lines aloud, and let each person add a sentence about their own concern. Ending the prayer together can help both of you rest knowing you are not carrying this alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over this day keep watch over your work, your decisions, and your rest tonight. May he give you a settled heart, clear direction in his time, and the sleep of someone who knows they are held. Go in peace, and let the morning come with fresh mercy.
