This simple prayer for a church leader is for the moments when you want to lift up a pastor, elder, deacon or ministry leader but do not know where to start. Pray it on a Sunday morning before service, during the week when a leader is facing a hard decision, or whenever their name comes to mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for a Church Leader

Lord, thank you for the men and women you have called to lead your people. We ask you to bless the pastor, elders and leaders of this church. Give them wisdom when the decisions are heavy and the answers are unclear. Guard their hearts from discouragement, especially when the people they love are struggling and they cannot fix it for them. Give them rest that is real, not just a day off on the calendar.

Be near to them in their families, in their marriages, and in the quiet hours when no one sees what they carry. Keep their prayer lives alive, so that they draw from you before they draw from anyone else. Protect them from pride when things go well and from despair when they do not. Help them to lead with humility, patience and courage. Let their words be true, their steps be steady, and their love for you grow deeper with every season. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless the leaders of our church today. Give our pastor wisdom for every conversation and every decision. Strengthen them when they feel tired or unseen, and remind them that you see everything they do. Keep their hearts close to yours and their families safe in your care. Help us to support them with our prayers and our hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the leaders who keep watch over your church. Ask God to help them carry their responsibility with joy rather than weariness, and ask him to remind the congregation of their own part in making that work lighter.

Ephesians 6:18-19

18 With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints: 19 on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News…

(WEB)

Paul asks the church to pray for him, and this passage is a fine model for praying for a leader. Bring your pastor’s preaching, their words and their courage before God, asking that they would speak clearly when the moment calls for it.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

This passage calls for prayers on behalf of everyone in positions of authority. Use it to lift up your church leaders by name, asking God for their peace, their godliness and the quiet stability that lets a congregation grow.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Leaders can easily feel that the whole church rests on their shoulders. Pray this psalm over them and ask God to be the builder of the work, so that your pastor can labor faithfully without carrying a weight only God can hold.

Acts 6:4

But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word.”

(WEB)

The apostles chose to give themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. Ask God to keep your leaders devoted to prayer and to his Word, so that their work flows from a close relationship with him rather than from busyness alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their church leaders early in the morning, before the day fills up. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee, or walk a loop around the block while you speak. If you have a bulletin or a photo of the leadership team, keep it nearby so that you can look at the faces of the people you are praying for and name each one aloud.

You can also invite others to join you. A small group, a family dinner table or a prayer chain can take this prayer and make it a shared habit. Consider writing a short note of encouragement after you pray, so that your prayer for your leader also becomes a word they can hold onto during the week.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give your pastor and every leader in your church a steady heart, a clear mind and a full cup of his peace. May they know they are loved, prayed for and never walking alone. May the work of their hands bear fruit that lasts, and may they hear, at the end of every day, the quiet voice of the one who called them.
