This evening prayer is for a missionary who has spent the day serving far from home, whether that means teaching, translating, caring for the sick, or simply learning to live in a new language and culture. It is written for the close of the day, when the work is set down and the heart needs to rest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names, places and burdens you know best.
Evening Prayer for a Missionary
Lord, the day is ending, and we bring it to you as it is. You know the conversations that went well and the ones that left us tired or confused. You know the words we fumbled in a language that still feels strange, the meals we shared, the people we worried about, and the plans that fell through. Take the day from our hands now. Forgive the impatience, the pride and the fear that crept in, and receive the small faithful things we did for your sake.
Watch over the people we serve tonight. Some are sleeping on hard floors, some are waiting for news, and some are carrying grief we will never fully understand. Go before them into the night and surround them with your peace. Keep our colleagues, our families back home, and the local believers who carry much of the weight with us. Guard our health, our homes and our safety, and give us sleep that is deep and unafraid. Let us wake tomorrow ready to trust you again.
Thank you for being with us in a place we did not choose out of comfort. Thank you for the friends you have given us, for the kindness of strangers, and for the quiet moments when we felt your nearness. We release our worries about results and numbers to you, because the work belongs to you and not to us. Hold us, Father, and let us rest in that. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, the day is done and I am far from rest in my body and mind. Take what I could not finish, what I said poorly, and what I carried too heavily. Protect the people I serve and the friends who labor beside me. Give me sleep, and let tomorrow begin in your faithfulness rather than my strength. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Pray these words when the day has brought little visible fruit. Thank God that his faithfulness begins again each morning, even after a hard evening.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer at the end of the day, once the last meal is cleared and the lights are lowered. If you can, sit somewhere quiet, such as a porch, a bed edge or a chair by a window, and hold a cup of tea or a notebook in your hands. Writing down two or three things from the day, both hard and good, can help you bring them to God with honesty rather than a vague sense of tiredness.
This prayer also works well when prayed with a spouse, a team member or a local partner who shares your work. Take turns reading the paragraphs, or pray the blessing over one another before you go to sleep. Asking a friend back home to pray the same words at the same hour can also help you feel connected across the distance.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over this missionary tonight. May he give rest to a weary heart, peace to an anxious mind, and protection to every home and every person entrusted to their care. May the morning bring fresh mercy, and may the one who sent them go with them into the day ahead.
