This short prayer is for the moment when resentment has taken hold of your heart and you want to release it to God. You can pray it when you wake up with an old hurt on your mind, after a painful conversation, or whenever you notice bitterness creeping back in. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add your own honest words.

Short Prayer for Letting Go of Resentment

Father, I come to you with a heart that is heavy and tired from holding on. I have replayed what was said and done to me, and every time I think about it the anger rises again. I want to be free of it, but I do not always know how to let it go. Please show me what I have been carrying that is not mine to carry.

I bring you the person I resent and the hurt they caused. I ask you to give me the strength to stop rehearsing their failure and the grace to stop wishing harm on them. Where I have been unfair, soften my heart to see my own part. Where I have been wronged, let me trust you to be the one who judges rightly. Help me set down the grudge a little at a time, even on the days when it feels like too much.

Thank you that you have forgiven me far more than I have ever needed to forgive anyone else. Fill the space where resentment lived with your peace. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am holding onto this hurt again, and it is wearing me down. I release this person and this wrong into your hands right now. Take the bitterness from me and help me breathe. I trust you to deal with what is unjust. Give me peace in this moment and the courage to keep letting go. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Paul names bitterness and anger and then points to kindness and forgiveness as the replacement. Pray these words slowly, asking God to show you where bitterness has settled and how to respond with kindness instead.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

This verse ties forgiveness to the forgiveness you have already received. As you pray it, remember the mercy God has given you and ask him to help you extend that same mercy to the person in your mind.

Romans 12:19

Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

(WEB)

Paul reminds us that vengeance belongs to God. Pray this verse when you feel the urge to settle the score, and ask God to take the matter into his own hands so you can rest.

Psalm 37:8

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret, it leads only to evildoing.

(WEB)

David urges the reader to refrain from anger and to turn away from wrath. Use this verse when you feel the heat rising in your chest, and ask God to calm your spirit before you say or do anything more.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Jesus links our forgiveness of others with the forgiveness we receive from God. Pray these verses honestly, acknowledging that holding a grudge puts a barrier between you and the grace you need.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time when you can speak without being interrupted, such as early in the morning or just before bed. Sit somewhere you feel settled, and keep a pen and paper nearby. Some people find it helpful to write the name of the person they are releasing on a slip of paper, then fold it and set it aside as a visible sign that they are giving the matter to God.

You do not need to feel forgiving before you pray. Be honest about the anger and the hurt, and let God see it fully. If you are finding it hard to pray alone, ask a trusted friend or pastor to pray with you, and let them hold you accountable to keep returning to this prayer when the old resentment comes back.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who has forgiven every debt you owed him meet you in the place of hurt and make room for healing. May his peace guard your heart and your thoughts, and may you find rest in knowing that justice and mercy are in his hands. Go in that peace.
