This is an evening prayer for a prayer group, written to be read aloud at the close of a day when the group gathers or when one member carries the group’s needs to God alone. You can pray it exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and burdens of the people in your circle. It works at the end of a meeting, before bed, or whenever the group has been apart and needs to come back together before the Lord.

Evening Prayer for a Prayer Group

Father, as this day closes, we bring ourselves to you together. Some of us are tired from work that did not go the way we hoped. Some of us are carrying a phone call we are still afraid of, a child who has not come home yet, a diagnosis we have not told anyone outside this room. You already know each name we have not said out loud. Hold them now, and hold the ones who are sitting awake tonight with worry they cannot put down.

Lord, we thank you for this group and for the trust it takes to pray honestly in front of one another. Thank you for every small answer we have seen this week, even the ones we almost missed. Settle our hearts so that we do not carry the day into the night. Guard our homes, our sleep, and our families while we rest. Let us wake tomorrow knowing you were watching over us while we slept. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we close this day in your hands. You know what we carried and what we set down. Be with the people we have prayed for and the ones we have not named yet. Give us sleep, give us peace, and keep watch over our homes and our loved ones through the night. We trust you with what we could not finish. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as the group settles in for the night. It names the peace that comes from trusting God to keep watch, which is a good thing to say together before anyone heads off to bed.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this when the group feels pressure to keep working or worrying past the point of rest. It reminds everyone that sleep itself is a gift from God, not a failure of effort.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Use this as the group releases the weight of the day. Invite each person to name one burden silently, then offer it to Jesus in the words of this invitation.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this for those who are anxious about the night ahead, whether they are on call, caring for someone sick, or away from home. It speaks of a watchful God who never dozes off.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Close the group’s evening with this passage as a reminder of God’s faithfulness. Each new morning is a fresh mercy, and the group can thank God for it in advance before the day begins again.

How to Pray This Prayer

Gather at a time when the day has slowed down, perhaps after dinner or just before bed. Sit close together, turn off the television, and keep a glass of water or a candle nearby so that everyone has something to hold. Let one person read the main prayer aloud, pausing after each paragraph so the group can add their own names silently or out loud before continuing.

If the group cannot meet in person, send the prayer in a message and ask each member to read it at their own bedtime at the same hour. Invite people to share one request afterward so the others know what to pray for the next day. Anyone who is alone can pray the shorter version and picture the faces of the group before falling asleep.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep each member of this group through the night and bring them back to the table in the morning rested and ready. May he guard their homes, quiet their fears, and remind them that they are known and loved. The peace of God that passes understanding will stand watch over every heart gathered in his name tonight.
