This prayer is for anyone whose mind keeps circling back to what might go wrong. You can pray it in the early morning before the day’s demands arrive, in the middle of a sleepless night, or in the quiet minutes before a difficult conversation or appointment. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries into the spaces it leaves open.

Prayer for the Worried

Lord, you know the thoughts that have been running through my head since I woke up. I keep rehearsing the bills, the phone call I have not returned, the test results I am waiting on, and the people I love who are struggling. My chest feels tight and my mind will not settle. I confess that I try to carry all of this by myself, as if the weight belongs to me alone. Help me see that it does not. Show me which worries are simply my imagination running ahead of what is real, and which ones I need to take one step toward today.

Father, I ask you to steady my breathing and my thoughts. Where I have been trusting in my own planning, teach me to trust in your care. When fear tells me that everything depends on me getting it right, remind me that you are already at work in situations I cannot see. Give me wisdom for the next decision, strength for the next hour, and the grace to rest when I cannot fix what is out of my hands. Guard the people I love, and let me pray for them rather than only worry about them.

I give you this anxious heart as it is, not as I wish it were. Replace my restlessness with a deeper peace that does not depend on how things turn out. Let me hear your voice more clearly than the noise of my fears. Thank you that I can bring you the small worries and the large ones alike. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my thoughts are racing and I feel the fear rising again. I give you the one thing that is weighing on me most right now. Quiet my mind, slow my breathing, and remind me that you are near. Help me take the next small step and leave the rest in your hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names the exact habit that worry feeds and offers its opposite: bring each concern to God with thanks. When you pray this passage, name specific worries aloud and then thank God for one thing you already see him providing.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

This verse pictures handing over a burden that is too heavy to keep carrying. Pray it slowly, picturing yourself setting down the bag you have been clutching, and ask God to show you what to release today.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

The peace described here comes from a mind kept fixed on God rather than on outcomes. Use this verse when your thoughts start spiraling, and gently turn your attention back to him each time they wander.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter tells believers to hand over every anxiety because God cares for them personally. Pray this verse by naming the person or situation you most want to entrust to that care.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus addresses the habit of borrowing tomorrow’s troubles. Pray this verse for the day in front of you, asking for strength for today alone and trusting God with what is still unknown.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can sit or stand somewhere quiet, even if it is only for three minutes. Some people find it helps to hold a cup of tea, press their palms together, or write their worries on a sheet of paper and set it beside them as they pray. Let your hands do something simple so your body can settle while your mind catches up.

If you are praying for someone else who is anxious, you can read this prayer together, taking turns with the sentences or placing a hand on their shoulder. A close friend, a pastor, or a family member can also pray it over you when your own words run out. Sharing the prayer lets the worry be held by more than one person.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who sees every worry also be the one who gives you rest. May his peace guard your heart and your mind when the day feels too full. May you find courage for the next step and grace for the steps still ahead. May you know that you are held, known, and loved.
