This evening prayer is for the moment when fear follows you into the night, when the day’s worries come back as you lie down and your mind starts running through what could go wrong. Pray it at bedtime, once the lights are off or just before you close your eyes. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own worries to God in your own words.

Evening Prayer for Overcoming Fear

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You everything I carried through it. I brought the fear about the call I was dreading, the bills I can’t seem to get ahead of, the health worry I haven’t said out loud, and the quiet dread about tomorrow that I don’t have words for. I set each one down in front of You now. You see every one of them, and nothing has caught You by surprise.

Father, I ask You to take the fear out of my chest and let me rest in Your care. Guard my sleep the way a watchman guards a house at night. Let my body unclench and my thoughts slow down. When my mind starts circling back to what frightens me, bring me back to the simple truth that You are awake, You are near, and You are good. Give me courage for tomorrow, but don’t ask me to carry it tonight. Thank You for this day, for the small kindnesses in it, and for the fact that I am not facing the dark alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I’m afraid, and I don’t want to lie awake with it. Take this fear from me and hold it for me. Quiet my mind and steady my breathing. Remind me that You are here in this room, in this quiet, and that You do not sleep or stop watching over me. I trust You with what I cannot fix tonight. Let me rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a bedtime promise. Pray it slowly as you settle in, letting the picture of lying down and sleeping without fear become your own prayer for the night.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

David wrote this in a time of danger and found he could still sleep. Pray it as a request that God would sustain you through the hours when you cannot see what is coming.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

These lines speak of a God who does not doze off on duty. Use them to picture Him keeping watch while you sleep, and let that picture ease your worry.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Peace in this verse comes from keeping the mind fixed on God. When your thoughts wander back to what scares you, gently return them to Him as you pray.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and the peace of God that guards the heart. Pray these verses by naming each worry specifically, then asking God to guard your heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time just before you sleep, after the phone is put away and the room is dim. Lying in bed is fine, but you may find it helps to sit on the edge of the bed for a minute first and let your feet touch the floor. Keeping one hand on your chest or on a blanket can help your body settle while you speak.

If you share a home, you might pray this aloud with a spouse, a roommate, or a child who is struggling with bedtime fear. Writing the prayer on a card and placing it on the nightstand gives you something to return to on the nights when your mind feels too loud to start from scratch.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you through the night be your rest and your shelter. May your fear lose its grip as you close your eyes, and may you wake to a morning where His mercy meets you again. Sleep well, knowing you are held.
