This evening prayer for discernment is for the end of the day, when you are trying to make sense of a decision, a conversation or a question you have not yet settled. Pray it before bed, while you are still and the day is behind you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Evening Prayer for Discernment
Lord, the day is ending and I am carrying questions I cannot answer tonight. I do not know yet which choice is right, and I am tired of turning it over in my mind. Thank you that you see what I cannot see, and that you know the road ahead even when I only see the next step. Please quiet the noise of my own worry so that I can hear you more clearly.
Show me what matters most in this situation. Strip away the pressure, the fear of disappointing people, and the hurry to be finished. Give me a clear sense of what is true, what is kind, and what is wise. If I am leaning toward something that does not honor you, turn my heart gently away from it. If I am holding back out of fear, give me the courage to move forward in trust.
Tonight I release the need to have everything figured out. I place this decision in your hands and ask you to guide my thoughts while I sleep. Let my rest be real, not restless, and wake me with a steadier mind. Keep watch over me through the night and let the morning bring the clarity I have been asking for. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out and unsure what to do next. Give me wisdom for this decision and quiet the anxious voices in my head. Show me the good path and help me take it without fear. Let me rest tonight knowing you are already working in this situation. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and ask God, by name, for the wisdom you lack tonight. Notice the promise that he gives generously and without finding fault, which means you can bring even a messy, uncertain question to him.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Pray these verses as a way of letting go of your own certainty. Ask God to help you trust him more than your own reasoning, and to make your path straight as you take the next step.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.
(WEB)
Use this verse to pray for light for the next step rather than the whole road. Ask God to let his word guide the ordinary choices you face, one lamp-lit step at a time.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as you prepare for sleep. Thank God that you can lie down in peace and rest because he is the one who keeps you safe, even while your decision is still unfinished.
Isaiah 30:21
And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”
(WEB)
Ask God to speak to you in the quiet of the evening, when distractions fall away. Pray that you will recognize his voice and be willing to turn toward it when he points the way.
How to Pray This Prayer
Set aside a few minutes after the lights are down, sitting on the edge of your bed or in a quiet chair. Keep a notebook nearby so that if a clear thought comes, you can write it down and let the rest go until morning. Pray slowly, pausing after each sentence to let your heart catch up with your words.
If you are praying with someone else, such as a spouse, a close friend or a mentor, ask them to pray the blessing over you afterward. Sharing the decision with another believer can take some of the weight off your shoulders and help you hear wise counsel. Let them know what you are discerning so they can pray specifically for you.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who knows the end from the beginning give you clear sight and a settled heart tonight. May he guard your sleep, steady your thoughts and lead you into the next day with confidence. The peace of God that surpasses understanding be with you until morning.
