This evening prayer for healing and comfort is for the end of the day, when the body is tired and the mind keeps replaying what hurt, what worried you, or what you could not fix. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you go inside, or sitting on the edge of a bed after the lights go off. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where the phrasing does not fit your situation.

Evening Prayer for Healing and Comfort

Father, the day is ending and I bring it to You as it is. My body aches in places I did not expect, and I am tired of pretending I am fine. I ask You to touch the sickness I carry, whether it is in my own body, in the mind that will not settle, or in the body of someone I love who is lying in a hospital bed or a bedroom down the hall. Heal what can be healed. Steady what cannot yet be fixed. Give the doctors wisdom, the nurses patience, and the family members who sit up late a measure of rest they have not had in weeks.

Lord, I also ask for comfort, the kind that reaches past the pain and sits with me in it. Quiet the fear that comes at night when the house is still and the worst possibilities seem loudest. Remind me that You do not sleep and do not look away. Let me set down the list of things I could not do today, and trust that You are still working while I rest. Guard my sleep through the night, and let me wake to a morning that is a little lighter than this one. Thank You for the small mercies of this day, a kind word, a cup of tea, a moment of relief. I receive them as gifts from You. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worn out and afraid tonight. Touch the pain I am holding and the people I love who are hurting. Give me rest in my body and quiet in my thoughts. Hold me through the dark hours, and let me wake knowing You were near. Thank You for being with me in this. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a bedtime prayer in itself. Pray it slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase be a release of the day’s worry into God’s keeping, and ask Him to give you the sleep that comes from trusting Him.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the wounds you are carrying, both visible and hidden. Ask God to bind up the broken places in your own heart and in the hearts of those you are praying for tonight.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When fear rises in the night, pray this promise back to God. Ask Him to make it real in the particular fear you are facing, and to strengthen you where your own strength has run out.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

This verse is an invitation. Bring the exhaustion of the day to Jesus as you pray, and ask Him to take the weight you were never meant to carry alone, including the weight of other people’s suffering.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the comfort you need and for the comfort you hope to pass on later. Ask God to let your own experience of His consolation become a way of reaching someone else who is struggling.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed place for this prayer, such as the side of your bed, a particular chair, or the corner of the kitchen after the dishes are done. Keeping the same place helps your body learn that the day is over. If you can, keep a glass of water or a small lamp nearby so your hands have something to hold while you speak.

If someone else in your home is sick or grieving, pray the prayer together, or ask them to say the Amen with you. You can also write the prayer on an index card and tuck it into the medicine cabinet or the nightstand drawer so it is ready when the night feels long. Over time, you may find that these words become your own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over the night watch over you and over the ones you love. May He ease the pain that keeps you awake, settle the fears that gather in the dark, and bring healing where it is needed most. May you sleep in peace and wake to a morning that carries His mercy with it.
