This evening prayer is for anyone who goes to bed still carrying something that happened long ago: a hurt, a regret, a choice you wish you could undo. You can pray it at the end of the day, sitting on the edge of the bed or lying in the dark, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.
Evening Prayer for Letting Go of the Past
Father, the day is closing, and I bring you the things I have been holding onto. I keep replaying the conversation that went wrong, the words I wish I had never said, and the moments when I failed the people I love. Some of these memories come back uninvited, and I find myself rehearsing them as if rehearsing could change anything. I am tired of carrying them.
So tonight I set them down in your hands. I confess the things I did that I cannot fix, and I ask you to forgive me where I have not yet received that forgiveness. I also name the hurts done to me by others, and I choose, with your help, not to keep score any longer. Where I have been unable to forgive, soften my heart and give me the willingness to begin again.
Thank you that your mercy is new every morning and that your grace does not run out at night. Guard my sleep and quiet my mind. Let the past stay where it belongs, and help me trust that you are already at work in what comes next. Hold me as I rest, and wake me tomorrow ready to receive the day you have made. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I release the past to you tonight. I give you the regret I cannot undo and the hurt I have been unable to let go of. Forgive what I have done, help me forgive what was done to me, and give me rest. I trust you with what is behind me and with the morning ahead. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 103:12
As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let it sink in as you pray. The psalmist uses the image of distance, reminding you that God does not measure your failures against you once they have been brought to him. Pray it as a gift you receive rather than a fact you must earn.
Isaiah 43:18-19
18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
(WEB)
God calls his people to stop fixating on former things and to watch for what he is doing now. Pray this passage by asking him to open your eyes to a new thing, even if it is small and hard to see at first.
Philippians 3:13-14
13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Paul speaks honestly about forgetting what lies behind and pressing forward. Use this verse to ask for the discipline to turn your attention away from old ground and toward the goal God has set before you.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Even in a book of grief, these lines name God’s mercies as new each morning. Pray them when the past feels heavy, trusting that tomorrow carries a fresh supply of his faithfulness rather than a repeat of yesterday’s failures.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(WEB)
John assures believers that confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing. Pray this verse by naming specific things you need to confess, then receiving the forgiveness the verse promises instead of holding onto guilt that God has already addressed.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a consistent moment at the end of the day, after the lights are off or just before you sleep. Some people find it helpful to keep a notebook beside the bed and write down the specific memories they are releasing, then close the notebook as they pray. Holding a physical object, such as a smooth stone or a folded note, can give your hands something to do while you let go.
If you are praying for someone else who is struggling with the past, you can read this prayer aloud in the room where they sleep, or pray it silently for them while they rest. A spouse, a close friend, or a pastor can also pray these words with you, reminding you that you do not have to carry old wounds alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who forgives completely and remembers your sins no more hold you through this night. May he quiet every old voice that accuses you and fill the quiet with his peace. May you wake to a morning untouched by yesterday’s failures and rest in the certainty that you are loved. Sleep well.
