This bedtime prayer for my family is written to be read aloud at the end of the day, once the lights are low and the house has finally gone quiet. You can pray it exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and worries that are on your heart tonight. It is meant to help you hand the day over to God, ask for His protection through the night, and thank Him for the people you love.

Bedtime Prayer for My Family

Father, thank You for the day that is ending. Thank You for the small mercies in it: the meal we shared, the laughter that broke out at the table, the moment someone said sorry and someone else said it was okay. Some things did not go the way we hoped. There were tears, tempers, and tasks left undone. Tonight I bring all of it to You and set it down at Your feet, because I cannot carry it through the night on my own.

Watch over each one of us as we sleep. Guard the little ones who are dreaming their small dreams and the teenagers who are lying awake with their phones glowing in the dark. Be near to anyone in our home who is sick, worried about money, grieving, or afraid of what tomorrow might bring. Settle their hearts. Give them rest that comes from knowing You are awake while they sleep. Keep our marriage and our friendships steady, and keep our words gentle when we wake up tomorrow. Give us patience with one another and courage for the things we have to face in the morning. Thank You that we belong to You and that nothing can snatch us out of Your hand. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the day is done, and my family is in Your care. Keep each of us safe through the night. Quiet the worries in our minds and help us rest in You. Be with the ones who are far away and the ones who are hurting. Thank You for the gift of them. Give us peace tonight and strength for tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your family as you turn out the light. It is a statement of trust: you can lie down and sleep because the Lord is the one keeping watch. Name each person in your home as you pray it, and let the words become a settled confidence rather than a rushed phrase.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the exhaustion of a long day. Use it to release the pressure to get everything right. Ask God to give your family the rest they need, and to remind you that He is not asking you to earn sleep through constant effort.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this slowly, picturing the people in your home one by one. Ask God to keep their feet from stumbling and to stay awake for them. These lines remind you that the one who watches over Israel never drifts off, so your family is never left unguarded.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this for the minds in your house that will not stop racing. Ask God to fix the thoughts of each family member on Him, so that worry loosens its grip. Peace here is not the absence of problems but a steady mind held by trust.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Close your prayer with thanks by using these words. Give thanks that God’s mercies meet your family again each morning, including the mornings after hard days. Ask Him to help everyone wake up tomorrow aware of His faithfulness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the evening, after the last glass of water and before the final check on the children. Sit on the edge of a bed or stand in the doorway of the room where your family is sleeping. If you have a hand free, rest it on the shoulder or the blanket of someone who is already asleep, and let your touch be part of the prayer.

You do not need to pray this alone. Invite a spouse, an older child, or a friend on the phone to add their own sentence at the end. If someone in the household cannot sleep, pray the shorter version together in a whisper. Keep a short list of names on the nightstand so that each night you can pray for the person who is struggling most.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep each member of this family in the shelter of His care tonight. May He give them rest that restores body and soul, and may His peace guard every heart and every mind. Let them wake to a new morning knowing they are loved by God and by one another.
