This evening prayer for letting go is for the end of the day, when the unfinished conversations, unpaid bills and unresolved worries are still pressing on your mind. Pray it at bedtime, after the lights are off, or as you sit on the edge of the bed before you lie down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak the words that rise up in you.
Evening Prayer for Letting Go
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I carry the mistakes I made at work, the sharp word I said to my child, and the email I still have not answered. I carry the fear about money, the ache about my health, and the worry about people I love who are far away. Some of these I cannot fix tonight, and some I should never have been holding in the first place. Help me see clearly what is mine to do tomorrow and what is yours to hold right now.
I open my hands and set these things down in front of you, one at a time. I release the need to control every outcome and the habit of replaying conversations in my head. Take the weight I have been pretending I can carry alone. Quiet the voice that says I am failing, and remind me that you are awake and attentive while I sleep. I trust you with the people I cannot protect and the plans I cannot guarantee.
Watch over my home and my rest tonight. Guard my body and my mind, and let me wake refreshed rather than still anxious. Thank you for the good things from today, even the small ones I almost missed. Let them be the last thing I remember before I drift off. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am tired and I am holding too much. I give you the day that is finished and the worries that keep me awake. I release what I cannot control and trust you with what is still unsettled. Take this weight from my shoulders, keep my family safe tonight, and give me rest. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 55:22
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let the word “burden” name whatever you are carrying tonight. Then pray it back to God as a simple handing over, saying the things you are releasing by name.
Matthew 11:28-29
28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
(WEB)
Pray this when exhaustion feels like the main problem. Ask Jesus to show you what rest looks like in your body tonight, not only in your schedule.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
(WEB)
Use this to name your anxieties one by one before God. Each worry you name becomes something you have handed over rather than something you are still gripping.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Pray this as you go through the events of the day, turning each concern into a request and then thanking God for the answer you are waiting on, even before it comes.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Let this be your closing prayer as your head meets the pillow. Ask God to make you safe and still, trusting that sleep itself is an act of faith.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed moment in your evening, such as after you brush your teeth or once the dishes are done, so the prayer becomes a habit rather than an occasional rescue. Sit somewhere quiet, perhaps the edge of your bed or a chair by the window, and keep the lamp low. Some people find it helps to open their hands, palms up, on their knees as they pray the line about setting things down.
If you share a home, you might pray the words aloud with a spouse, a roommate or a child old enough to join in. You could also write down the two or three worries you named most strongly and place the paper somewhere out of sight until morning. Whoever prays with you, let the prayer end with a moment of silence before anyone speaks again.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep you tonight and carry what you could not carry alone. May you lay down your worries and find that they are held by a faithful hand. May your sleep be deep, your heart be quiet, and your morning begin with fresh mercy. Rest well in the peace of God.
