This evening prayer is for the end of a day when you have made decisions, large or small, and wonder whether you chose well. It is meant for bedtime or the quiet hour before sleep, when you can hand the day’s choices to God and ask for wisdom for tomorrow. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your concerns are different.
Evening Prayer for Making Wise Choices
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you. I thought through decisions at work, at home, and in the small moments when I had to choose what to say or what to do next. Some of those choices felt clear, and some I still turn over in my mind. Thank you that you see every one of them, and that nothing I chose was hidden from you.
Where I acted in haste, forgive me. Where I put my own comfort or fear ahead of what was good, show me, and let me see it without shame that keeps me from coming back to you. Help me to name what I did wrong and to receive your forgiveness. Where I chose well, let me give you the credit, because I know my wisdom is thin without you.
Tonight I ask for a steady mind and a quiet heart. Go before me into tomorrow’s choices, the ones I can see and the ones I cannot. Give me clear sight to tell what is true from what only looks urgent, and the patience to wait when waiting is wise. Guard my sleep, and keep me in your care through the night. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and I have made many choices today. Forgive me where I got it wrong, and thank you for the ones that were good. Give me wisdom for tomorrow, and help me trust you with what I cannot yet see. Hold me through the night and let me rest in your care. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
Pray this verse by asking God by name for the wisdom you lack right now, specifically for the decision that has been weighing on you. Notice that the verse promises generosity without scolding, so you can come to him without hiding how unsure you feel.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and name the place where you have been leaning on your own understanding today. Ask God to make your paths straight, and let the words become a release of that day’s decisions into his hands.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
This verse is a gift for bedtime. Pray it as a way of setting down the day’s worries, asking that you would lie down and sleep because you are safe in God rather than because every problem has been solved.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Use this verse to confess that you cannot carry every outcome of your choices. Ask God to give you rest in him, trusting that he holds what you cannot control while you sleep.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Pray this verse with gratitude for God’s faithfulness. Thank him that his mercies are new each morning, and ask that tomorrow’s choices would begin in that fresh mercy rather than in yesterday’s mistakes.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after you brush your teeth, once the lights are dimmed, or while you sit on the edge of your bed. Keep a notebook or your phone nearby so you can jot down any decision that is still unsettled, then pray for each one by name. Many people find it helps to sit with an open hand, palms up on their knees, as a physical sign of releasing what they have been carrying.
If you share a home, you might pray this prayer aloud with a spouse, a roommate, or a child who is old enough to understand. Ask them to add their own concerns, and pray for one another’s choices as well as your own. Praying together can make the night feel less like a burden you carry alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord guide your steps and steady your heart as you rest. May he give you the wisdom you need for tomorrow and the peace to leave the results in his hands. May he keep you safe through the night and wake you with mercy that is new.
