This short morning prayer is for anyone sitting an exam today, whether it is a final, a licensing test, a university paper or a certification you have been preparing for for months. Pray it when you wake up, while you are dressing, or on the way to the testing room. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit better.

Short Morning Prayer for Those Taking an Exam

Lord, I come to you before the day gets loud. You know what I have studied and what I have not, and you know the knot in my stomach this morning. Thank you that I do not have to walk into this room alone. Settle my thoughts so that what I learned last week comes back to me when I need it. Keep my hands steady on the pen and my eyes clear on the questions in front of me.

Give me a calm mind when a question looks unfamiliar. Help me read each line carefully instead of rushing, and remind me to breathe when panic starts to rise. If I make mistakes, let them be honest ones that I can learn from, not reasons to despair. Let my effort be enough to show what I know, and let my worth rest in you rather than in a single score. Thank you for the teachers, friends and family who have helped me get this far. Be with them today too, and be with me from the first question to the last. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am nervous and I need you right now. Steady my breathing and quiet my fear. Bring to mind what I have prepared, and help me think clearly one question at a time. I trust you with the outcome and with this moment. Help me do my best and leave the rest in your hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Before you walk in, bring every worry about the exam to God in plain words. Ask for what you need, then notice the peace that can settle your heart even while the stakes still feel high.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the urge to predict every outcome. Pray it as a reminder that you can lean on God’s direction even when you cannot see how the results will turn out.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When fear rises during the paper, return to this promise. Pray that God would strengthen you in the moment and help you remember that he is near, not distant.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Ask God for wisdom in the specific places where you feel stuck. Pray this verse as a simple request for clear thinking and good judgment on the questions that matter most.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Let this psalm lift your eyes from the pressure of the test to the Lord who helps. Pray it as a declaration that your help comes from him, not from your own strength alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer somewhere quiet before you leave the house, even if it is only five minutes sitting on the edge of your bed or at the kitchen table with a cup of tea. Keep something in your hands while you speak, such as your pen, your admission ticket, or a cool glass of water, so that your body has a place to settle. If you are praying with a parent, sibling, friend or study partner, ask them to read the prayer aloud while you listen, then trade places.

Before you enter the exam room, you can pray the shorter version silently in the hallway or in your car. Afterward, thank God for the effort you gave, whatever the outcome feels like, and let the next day begin with a fresh prayer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into that room and steady your mind from the first question to the last. May he bring to memory what you have learned and grant you a clear heart and a calm spirit. May you walk out knowing you did your honest best, held in the peace of the one who has been with you all along.
