This evening prayer is for anyone who is sick, in pain, recovering from surgery, or simply worn down in body and waiting for relief. It is meant to be prayed at the end of the day, before sleep, as you hand your body and your worries to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Evening Prayer for Physical Healing
Lord, the day is ending and my body is tired. You know every ache I carried through the hours, the pain that made it hard to focus, the medicine I took and the doctors’ words I am still turning over. I do not need to hold all of it tonight. I bring it to you and set it down in your hands. Be near to the places that hurt, and let my body rest in the quiet you give.
Father, I ask for healing, in my body and in the bodies of those I love who are sick tonight. Strengthen what is weak, calm what is inflamed, and guide the hands of those who care for me. Give wisdom to the people who make decisions about my treatment, and give me patience with the slow pace of getting better. Where I am afraid of what the morning will bring, remind me that you have already been there.
Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my breathing, steady my heart, and let my body do the quiet work of repair that only you can design. Keep me from waking in fear, and if I do wake, let me find you there. Thank you for the rest you give and the mercy that meets me each night. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and I am hurting. Be near me tonight. Heal what is broken, ease what is painful, and give my body the rest it needs. Guard me while I sleep and bring me through to morning with strength I could not find on my own. Thank you that I am not alone in this. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 103:2-3
2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…
(WEB)
Pray this slowly as a list of gifts. Thank God for the benefits you already have, then ask him to forgive what needs forgiving and to heal what still aches in your body tonight.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
This verse is perfect for the moment you lie down. Name the fear that keeps you awake, then speak this verse aloud as a statement of trust that you can sleep because God keeps watch.
Psalm 147:3
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
(WEB)
Bring the specific wounds of your body to God as you pray this. Name the injury, the illness, or the pain by name, and ask him to be the one who binds up what has been torn.
Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.
(WEB)
When you feel weak in body and spirit, pray this verse as a request for strength. Ask God to give you enough energy for tomorrow and to renew what has been drained by illness or exhaustion.
James 5:14-15
14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
(WEB)
This passage speaks of prayer for the sick within the community of faith. Pray it for yourself or ask someone you trust to pray it with you, and bring your need honestly before the people God has placed around you.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time close to going to bed, when the lights are low and the day’s noise has settled. Sit on the edge of the bed or lie down with a hand resting on the part of your body that hurts most. Breathe slowly between sentences, and let the prayer take as long as it needs. If you are too tired to finish, stop at the amen you reach and trust that God heard every word.
You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a spouse, a friend, a roommate, or a family member to read it aloud while you rest, or to pray the shorter version over you before they leave the room. Many people find that hearing a trusted voice pray for their healing brings a peace that silent prayer sometimes cannot.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he ease the pain that wakes you, quiet the fear that visits in the dark, and bring healing to the body he made. May you rest in his care until morning, and may you wake knowing you were held through the night.
