This morning prayer is for the decisions you will face today, from the small choices at breakfast to the weightier ones at work, at home, or in a difficult conversation. Pray it first thing, before your phone and your inbox pull your attention in every direction, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.
Morning Prayer for My Decisions
Lord, I come to you before the day has had a chance to fill up. I do not know everything that is coming. I will have to choose how to answer the email that has been sitting in my inbox, whether to speak up in the meeting, how to respond when my child asks for something I am not sure I should give, and what to do about the money that never seems to stretch far enough. Some of these choices feel small and some feel heavy, and I am tired of carrying them around in my head before I have even stood up.
So I ask you for wisdom, the kind that sees what is true and does what is good. Show me what matters most today and what can wait. Quiet the voices of fear and pressure that tell me I must decide everything right now, and help me hear your direction underneath them. Where I am tempted to please people more than I please you, turn my heart back toward what is right. Where I lack knowledge, give me the humility to ask for help and the sense to seek counsel from people you have placed around me.
Father, I trust that you see the whole road ahead, even when I can only see the next step. Guide my hands, my words and my timing. If I choose badly, meet me in the mess and show me how to make it right. Let me walk through this day with a steady mind and an open heart. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I have a decision in front of me right now, and I do not feel ready for it. Give me wisdom for this moment and the sense to pause before I speak or act. Show me the next faithful step, and help me trust you with the rest of the day. Thank you that you hear me even when I cannot find the words. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and pray it as a request you truly expect God to answer. Ask him for wisdom by name, specifically for the choices you will make today, and notice that the promise is generous, not grudging.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Use these verses to name the places where you lean on your own understanding, such as your plans, your fears or your sense of what others expect. Then ask God to make your paths straight as you make each decision.
Psalm 25:4-5
4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.
(WEB)
Pray this as the words of a person asking to be taught. Ask God to show you his ways in the particular decisions ahead, and to lead you in his truth through the hours of your day.
Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.
(WEB)
Let this verse become a promise you pray back to God. Ask him to instruct you and guide you with his eye on you, so that you can respond to his direction without needing every answer in advance.
Isaiah 30:21
And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”
(WEB)
Pray this when you feel uncertain about which way to turn. Ask God to make his voice clear in your heart and your circumstances, and to give you the willingness to follow it when it comes.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it while you are still in bed or while your coffee is brewing, before you check your messages or look at the day’s calendar. If you have a notebook, write down the two or three decisions you expect to face and read the prayer over that short list. Sitting by a window or stepping outside for a minute can help your mind slow down enough to listen.
You might also keep your hands busy as you pray, holding a mug, resting a hand on your Bible, or pressing your palms together. If you share a home or a commute with someone you trust, ask them to pray this with you or for you, and check in with them that evening about how the decisions went.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give wisdom to the one who asks, and may he lead each step of this day with patience and peace. Where the choices feel uncertain, may his presence be steady beneath them. May he who sees the whole road walk with you through every turn.
