This morning prayer is for anyone who wants to bring their home, the people under its roof, and the day ahead before God before the first cup of coffee is finished. Pray it as the sun comes up, before anyone else is awake or while the kitchen is still quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for My Home

Father, I bring this house to you before the day begins. Thank you for the roof over our heads, the walls that keep out the cold, and the rooms where we eat, rest, argue, laugh, and recover from hard days. Guard the doorways tonight and today. Let the people who come and go be kept safe on the roads, at work, at school, and in every place we will not see. Where there is tension between us, soften it before it hardens. Where someone is worried about money, a diagnosis, a child who is struggling, or a parent who is far away, give us wisdom for what is in our hands and peace about what is not. Make our home a place where kindness is practiced at the breakfast table and patience is found when the car keys go missing. Fill the small tasks of this day, the dishes, the laundry, the phone calls, the emails, with purpose. Keep our hearts tender toward one another, and our hands ready to help. Let the people who step through our door this week feel welcomed and not hurried. Be the one who builds this house, as the psalm says, and keep watch over us when we cannot keep watch over ourselves. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this home belongs to you. Watch over the people in it today, and go before each of us into the morning. Keep our words gentle and our work honest. Give us patience with one another and courage for what we face alone. Let peace settle in these rooms before we leave them. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the walls of your house and asking God to be the builder and guard of it. Ask him to take the weight you carry about keeping everything together and set it in his hands.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse by deciding aloud, in front of God, what your household will serve and trust. Ask him to give the people under your roof a shared commitment to his ways, even when the details of the day are messy.

Proverbs 24:3

Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established…

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the practical side of home life, the budget, the schedule, the chores, and the repairs. Ask for wisdom to build a household that is steady and well ordered rather than only busy.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you open the door and watch people leave for school, work, or appointments. Ask God to guard their going out and their coming in, and to bring each one safely back home.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the way you treat one another in close quarters. Ask God to help you show affection and honor to the people you live with, especially when you are tired or irritated early in the day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it while you are standing in the kitchen or sitting at the table with a cup in your hands, before the phone or the news enters the room. If you have a spouse, child, roommate, or parent in the house, you might pray it aloud together, each person naming one thing they are carrying into the day. Keeping a small object on the table, such as a candle or a wooden cross, can serve as a quiet reminder to return to this prayer if the morning gets loud.

You can also pray it on your own while the others sleep, or when you are walking through the house to open curtains and turn on lights. Let each room become a short prayer: the bedrooms for rest, the kitchen for nourishment and conversation, the front door for safe comings and goings. Pray it again in the evening if it helps you close the day as well as open it.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this home and keep every person in it today. May he make the doorways safe, the work fruitful, and the hearts within these walls warm toward one another. May his peace settle over every room before the day is done.
