This morning prayer is for anyone who wants their day to draw them closer to God, and who would like to ask for help growing in faith before the first demands of the day arrive. Pray it when you first wake, before you check your phone or open your inbox. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for My Spiritual Growth

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of another day to know you better. Before I reach for my phone or think about my list, I want to turn my heart toward you. I confess that I often start my days in a rush, and my soul gets left behind while my schedule takes over. Slow me down today. Help me notice your presence in the quiet moments, in the coffee cooling on the counter, and in the first conversation I have with someone I love.

Give me a hunger for your word that goes beyond a habit I check off. When I open the Scriptures, open my understanding, and let what I read take root in my actions and not only in my thoughts. Where I am stubborn, soften me. Where I am proud, humble me. Where I have grown cynical or tired in my faith, renew my first love for you. Shape my patience, my honesty and my kindness so that the people I meet at work, at home and on the road today see something of Jesus in me.

Be with me in the hard moments I can already see coming, and in the ones I cannot. When I am tempted to grumble, remind me of your faithfulness. When I fail, let me return to you quickly without hiding. Grow in me what is good, and let the fruit of your Spirit show up in ordinary tasks. I give you this day, every hour of it, and I trust you with the person I am becoming. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I belong to you this morning. Draw me closer to you before the day pulls me away. Teach me to listen, to trust and to love well. Let my faith grow a little deeper with each hour, and help me remember that you are with me in every task and conversation. Make me more like Jesus today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 143:10

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request for guidance before your day takes its shape. Ask God to teach you his ways in the specific choices you will face, from how you speak to a coworker to how you spend your free hour.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Ask God to renew your mind this morning so that your thoughts about work, money and relationships begin to line up with his truth. Let this verse be a quiet promise that growth comes from transformation, not from willpower alone.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

When you feel behind in your faith, pray this verse back to God. Thank him that the work he began in you is not finished, and ask him to keep going with you today.

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for growth in grace and in knowledge of Jesus. Pray it over the people you will meet today, asking that they too would grow in the same knowledge.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Let these words steady you when yesterday’s failures still feel heavy. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask him to help you receive that mercy and walk in it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try to pray this prayer within the first ten minutes after you wake, while you are still sitting on the edge of your bed or standing at the kitchen sink. Keep a Bible or a notebook nearby so you can read one of the Scripture passages aloud before you begin. If your mornings are busy, pray the shorter version while you make coffee or wait for the kettle. Writing down one specific thing you want to grow in today can help the prayer stay with you after you close your eyes.

A spouse, a friend or a small group can pray this prayer with you, or pray it over you on the days you feel stretched thin. Some people find it helpful to pray the same words each morning for a week and then notice what has shifted in their attitude or patience. Let the prayer become a habit you return to, not a test you have to pass.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who began a good work in you keep leading you deeper into his love today. May his word settle in your heart, his peace guard your thoughts, and his grace meet you in every task. May you grow steadily in faith, and may your life point others toward the One who made you.
