This morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up with a knot in the stomach, already rehearsing the day’s problems before their feet touch the floor. Pray it in the first minutes of the day, before you check your phone or open your inbox. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries into the words.
Morning Prayer for Overcoming Worry
Lord, I am awake, and already my mind is running ahead of me. I think about the meeting at nine, the call I have been dreading, the bills that need paying before Friday, and the conversation with my teenager that I keep putting off. I feel my shoulders tighten and my breathing get shallow. Before I try to solve any of it, I want to hand it to you. You know every detail of this day better than I do, and you have not been surprised by any of it.
Father, go before me into the hours ahead. Steady my thoughts when they start spinning, and bring me back to the task in front of me when I drift toward what might go wrong. Give me wisdom for the decisions I must make, patience with the people I will meet, and enough strength for the work I can actually do today. Where I cannot control the outcome, help me trust the one who holds tomorrow. Let me be present with the people who need me, and let me rest in the fact that you are already at work in all of it. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, the worry is loud this morning, and I cannot quiet it on my own. Be near me now. Take the list of things I am afraid of and hold it for me. Help me take the next right step, and then the one after that. I trust you with the rest of the day, one hour at a time. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Paul names the exact pattern of worry and prayer. Read it slowly, then pray the same thing back to God in your own words, naming each anxious thought as a request rather than a burden you must carry alone.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

Peter gives a simple instruction: hand over the anxiety. As you pray, picture setting each worry on the table in front of God, one at a time, and leaving it there.
Psalm 55:22
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

This verse uses the image of a weight placed on a stronger shoulder. Pray it by naming the specific weight you are carrying this morning and asking God to take it from you.
Matthew 6:34
Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

Jesus addresses tomorrow directly. Pray this verse as you look at the first hour of your day, asking for grace to deal with today’s trouble without borrowing tomorrow’s.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

The peace in this verse comes from a mind fixed on God. Pray it slowly, and each time your thoughts wander to a worst-case scenario, return your attention to the Lord and say his name.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer before you pick up your phone, while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or standing at the kitchen sink with your coffee. Keep a pen and paper nearby, and write down the two or three worries that come up most strongly. Read them back to God as you pray, and when you finish, put the paper somewhere you will see it later, as a reminder that the worries were given over, not just thought about.
If you live with someone who also struggles with anxiety, pray this prayer together over breakfast and ask each other which specific concern is heaviest for them. A spouse, friend or roommate can pray the shorter version over you when the day starts to pull you under. Use your hands while you pray if that helps: press your palms together, or open them slowly, as if you are releasing what you have been gripping.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you in every hard conversation. May his peace guard your heart when your thoughts race ahead, and may he give you courage for each task he has placed in your hands. Rest in his faithfulness, and know that you are held.
