This page offers a morning prayer for a sick friend, written so you can pray it as your day begins or carry it into the hours ahead. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces between the lines.

Morning Prayers for a Sick Friend

Lord, I come to you before the day has fully started. You know the friend I am thinking of this morning, and you know the particular weight of their illness, the tiredness that greets them when they first wake, and the questions they may not be able to say out loud. Be near them in the first hour of this day. Let them sense that they are not alone in the quiet room, the waiting, or the long hours that stretch ahead.

I ask for their body to be strengthened where it is weak and for their pain to be eased where it is heavy. Give their doctors and nurses wisdom and patience today, and give their family rest so they can keep showing up. Where fear is sitting at the edge of their thoughts this morning, replace it with a steady peace that does not depend on how they feel. Help them rest when they need to rest and find a small measure of joy in the ordinary things today has to offer.

Father, I also bring myself. Show me how to be a good friend in this season, whether that means a phone call, a meal left on the porch, or simply praying when I do not know what else to do. Keep my words kind and my hands useful. Thank you that your care for my friend is larger than anything I can see or do. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is sick and I am asking you to be close to them this morning. Ease what hurts, calm what frightens them, and give them strength for the hours ahead. Surround them with people who love them and help me to be the kind of friend they need today. Thank you that you are already at work in their life. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your friend by naming the fear that might be pressing on them this morning. Ask God to be the refuge they can run to when their strength runs low, and let the reminder that he is close steady your own heart as you pray.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it become a prayer for your friend’s courage. Ask God to remind them that he is with them in the hospital room, the doctor’s office, or the bed where they are resting, and that his strength is available even when their own feels thin.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring your friend’s wounds, both physical and emotional, before the Lord in this verse. Pray for healing in the places that hurt, and for God’s gentle work in the parts of their heart that have been bruised by illness, worry, or disappointment.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Use this invitation as a prayer for rest. Ask Jesus to draw your friend close and to lighten the exhaustion that comes with being sick, so they can receive the comfort of being cared for rather than only trying to manage.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your friend feels weak or discouraged by their limits. Ask God to show them his grace in the middle of their weakness, and to let his strength be visible in small ways throughout the day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer as soon as you wake, before you pick up your phone or check the news. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of something warm in your hands, and let the first minutes of the day belong to God and to your friend. If you can, write your friend’s name on a card and keep it near your coffee or your keys as a reminder to pray through the morning.

You might also invite someone else to pray with you, a family member, a spouse, or another friend who knows your sick friend. Share the prayer aloud or send it to them by text so you are lifting your friend up together. Agreeing in prayer often brings a sense of shared support that helps both of you carry the burden a little more lightly.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord hold your friend steady this morning and fill them with a quiet strength that carries them through the day. May they feel the nearness of people who love them and the presence of God who never leaves. May you also be held in grace as you walk alongside them, and may the peace of Christ guard both your hearts today.
