These morning prayers for Sunday school teachers are written for the hour before you walk into the classroom, when the lesson plan is half-read and the children are still a few hours away. Pray them over your coffee, in the car, or in the empty room before the first child arrives. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for Sunday School Teachers

Lord, I come to you before the day has properly begun. I have a lesson to teach, and I feel the weight of it already. Some of these children are going through things at home that I will never fully see. Some will sit quietly and watch me, and some will test every boundary I set. Give me patience for the wiggly ones and wisdom for the quiet ones. Help me remember that they are not only listening to my words but watching how I treat them when I am tired or distracted.

Open my mouth so that what I say is clear enough for a seven-year-old and true enough for a grown-up to take seriously. Keep me from rushing past the question a child asks just because I have a schedule to keep. Let me notice the child who came in late and looks like they want to disappear. Help me greet each one by name and mean it. Go before me into that room, and let the time we share point them toward you, not toward me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am nervous about today’s class and I am asking for your help. Settle my thoughts and give me a clear voice. Let the children feel safe with me and let them feel your nearness through the way I speak and listen. Teach me through them as much as I teach them. Let the time we spend together make your love easier to see. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the children in your room by name, asking God to shape their hearts over years rather than expecting results in a single morning. It reminds you that your steady, faithful presence is planting something that may take a long time to grow.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Before class, read this verse slowly and let it quiet your hurry. Ask God to help you be still enough to hear what he wants to say through you, and to let the room settle around that stillness.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Bring this verse to the unglamorous parts of your work, such as setting out the crayons, printing handouts and cleaning up spilled juice. Ask God to make these small acts of service feel like worship offered to him.

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud…

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your patience and your tone of voice. Ask God to make your love for these children kind and steady, especially on the mornings when a child’s behavior tests you.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Use this verse to picture the Shepherd gathering the lambs close. Ask him to help you gather your class in the same way, so that every child, including the restless and the lonely, feels held and noticed.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version in the quiet minutes after you arrive at church and before the first child walks through the door. Sit at the table where you will teach, or stand near the window if that helps you focus. Keep your lesson book open in front of you so that the prayer and the plan stay connected in your mind.

If you teach with a co-leader, invite them to pray the shorter version with you, or take turns praying one sentence each. Many teachers also find it helpful to pray the morning prayer aloud on the drive over, with the car windows up and no one else to perform for. Whatever your setting, let the prayer be a place where you hand over the day, not a checklist you must complete perfectly.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before every teacher who opens a door this morning and walk with them into every room. May he give them patience when the day is long, joy when a child finally understands, and peace when the lesson does not go as planned. May the faithful love they show be seen by the children, and may those children grow up knowing how close God is to them.
