This night prayer for a caregiver is written for the end of a long day spent looking after someone else, whether that is a parent, a spouse, a child with special needs, or a friend in declining health. Pray it at bedtime, once the last task is done and the house is quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for a Caregiver

Lord, the day is ending, and I am setting it down in your hands. I thought of the medication times, the meals I tried to make appealing, the appointments, the phone calls, and the moments of worry I could not hide from the person I care for. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. Forgive me for the impatience that crept in when I was tired, and thank you for the strength you gave me when I had none left to give myself.

Be near to the one I look after tonight. Ease their pain, calm their fears, and let them sleep without waking in confusion. Guard my own body and mind as well, because I cannot keep giving if I am running on empty. Let me rest without the list running in my head, and let the quiet be a gift rather than another reminder of what is still undone. Watch over our home through the night, and let morning come with fresh mercy. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am worn out and I am handing you the rest of this day. Be with the one I care for, give them peaceful sleep, and give me enough rest to start again in the morning. Thank you for being awake when I cannot be. Keep us both safe until dawn. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting it remind you that sleep itself is a form of trust. You are not the only one keeping watch over the person you care for, and you can rest because God is awake on your behalf.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks against the belief that everything depends on your effort alone. Pray it when you feel guilty for stopping, and ask God to help you receive rest as something he gives, not something you must earn.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him, and caregivers are often the most weary people in the room. Pray this verse by naming your exhaustion honestly and bringing it to him without pretending you are fine.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your strength feels completely spent. Pray it as a request for renewed energy for tomorrow, trusting that God gives power to the tired even when you cannot see where it comes from.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these verses to mark the end of a hard day with gratitude for fresh mercy. Ask God to let the morning bring new compassion for the person you look after, even if today was more difficult than you hoped.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment, such as after the last medication is given or once the lights go down, so the prayer becomes part of your routine rather than one more task. Sit somewhere comfortable near the bed or in a chair beside the person you care for, and rest one hand on something steady, like the arm of the chair or your own knee. Speaking quietly is enough.

If you have a spouse, sibling, friend, or faith community member who can help, ask them to pray it with you or to pray it for you on nights when you cannot find words. Some caregivers keep a card with the shorter version on the nightstand so they can read it in the dark. Let the prayer be honest, and let it be short if that is all you have.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you and the one you care for grant you deep and untroubled sleep tonight. May his peace settle over your home like a blanket, and may he meet you with fresh strength when the morning comes.
