This night prayer is for the evening before a child starts school, or the nights that follow their first weeks there. It is meant to be prayed at bedtime, when the backpack is by the door and the day’s nerves have started to settle. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names, fears and hopes you carry for your own child.

Night Prayer for a Child Starting School

Father, the day is ending and the house is quiet now. Thank You for the morning we got through, for the uniform that fits, the lunch that got packed and the goodbye we managed to say without too many tears. Thank You for carrying us through a day that felt so big for our child. Tonight we place their new school in Your hands, the hallways they don’t know yet, the teacher whose name they are still learning, and the children they haven’t met.

Lord, you know what keeps our child awake. Maybe it is the fear of getting lost, of not having anyone to sit with at lunch, or of being asked a question they cannot answer. Be the one who stays close in those moments. Give them a steady heart when the room is loud, a kind friend when they feel alone, and the courage to ask for help. Let them remember that they are known and loved by You, even in a place where no one else yet knows their name.

Now we ask You to watch over their sleep tonight. Guard their rest and let their body be still. Let the worries of tomorrow wait until morning, and let them wake ready for whatever the day brings. Keep our hearts at peace too, and help us trust You with the parts of this new season we cannot see. Thank You that You never sleep, and that Your care reaches every classroom and every playground. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for the day we have had. Be with our child tonight as they lie down, and calm the worries still stirring in their mind. Guard their sleep and keep them safe until morning. Give them courage for school tomorrow, a kind friend when they need one, and a sense that You are close. Help us rest in You too. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your child as they fall asleep. It names the rest that comes from God’s protection, and it reminds you both that safety does not depend on how the first day went.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the restlessness of worry and the gift of sleep. Pray it for your child, asking God to give them rest that does not have to be earned or forced.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this promise when your child feels unsure of the unfamiliar. Pray that they would hear God’s nearness in the new rooms and new faces of school.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the anxious parts of your child’s heart and for your own. Ask that worry would be turned into prayer, and that God’s peace would guard both of you through the night.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

This verse is about strength and not being left alone. Pray that your child would know God goes ahead of them into every new place, including the classroom door they must walk through tomorrow.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this at bedtime, ideally in your child’s room while they are still awake or after the light is off. Sitting on the edge of the bed with a hand resting on their back or shoulder can help them settle, and it gives you something gentle to do with your hands while you speak. If your child is old enough, invite them to add their own sentence, or to name one thing they are looking forward to and one thing they are nervous about.

You can also pray it on your own, or with a partner, a grandparent or a church friend who knows your child’s name. Keep a copy by the bed so you can return to it on the hard nights of the first term. Many parents find that praying the same words each evening gives both them and their child a sense of rhythm, and that the familiar prayer becomes a place of comfort through the changes that school brings.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your little one in the safety of His arms tonight. May He go before them into every classroom and every new friendship, and may they wake rested, brave and glad to be known. May the peace of God guard their heart and yours until morning. Amen.
