This prayer is for the ordinary wisdom every day asks of us: knowing what to say, what to decide, and what to let go of before the day gets loud. Pray it first thing in the morning, while the house is quiet, or whenever you feel the need to ask God for clear thinking in the hours ahead. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for Daily Wisdom

Lord, I come to you before the day starts pulling at me. You know what is waiting: the emails I have not answered, the conversation I am dreading, the choice about money that will not wait, and the people who depend on me to be patient when I am tired. I do not have enough wisdom for all of it on my own, and I am grateful that you are generous with wisdom to anyone who asks.

Give me discernment about what matters most today, so that I do not spend my strength on what only feels urgent. Slow my words so I speak with kindness and honesty, and help me listen longer than I want to. When I face a decision I cannot see clearly, show me the next faithful step, even if the whole path stays hidden. Keep my heart steady when I am tempted to rush, worry, or pretend I know more than I do.

Thank you that you do not scold me for asking. I trust you with this day and with the people in it. Guide my thoughts, my work, and my choices so that they honor you and serve the ones I love. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need wisdom right now, and I am asking you for it. Show me what to say, what to do next, and what can wait. Quiet the noise in my mind so I can hear you clearly. Help me be kind when I am tired and honest when it is hard. Thank you that you give wisdom freely to those who ask. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and then turn it into your own request. Ask God, by name, for the wisdom you lack today, trusting that the asking itself is welcome and that he gives without making you feel small for needing help.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse to offer your own understanding to God and admit where it runs out. Pray that he would make your path straight in the specific decision in front of you, leaving room for him to lead where you cannot see.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape the way you spend your time. Ask God to teach you to number your days, so that you give your attention to what is truly important and not only to whatever is loudest this morning.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you open your Bible or your phone for the day. Ask that God’s word would light the next step in front of you, enough to walk by even when the wider road is not yet visible.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray about your conversations. Ask God to make your speech gracious and seasoned with truth, so that the people you meet today receive something good from you, especially when you are tempted to be sharp.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying it in the first ten minutes after you wake, before you check your phone. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps with a cup of coffee in both hands so your body stays calm while your mind settles. If you can, keep a small notebook nearby and jot down one decision or conversation the prayer brings to mind, then come back to it at lunchtime.

If you are praying for someone else, such as a child, a spouse, or a coworker facing a hard choice, read the prayer aloud in the first person as if you were asking on their behalf, changing the pronouns as you go. A friend or family member can also pray it with you over the phone, which often helps the words stay in your heart longer than they would alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord, who gives wisdom generously and without reproach, go before you into this day. May he give you clear thoughts, gentle words, and the courage to take the next faithful step. May you walk in his peace whatever the hours bring, and may your decisions reflect his goodness to everyone you meet.
