This is a Christian prayer for a new year, written to be prayed at the start of January, on the first morning of a new calendar, or on any day when you feel the weight of what lies ahead. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names, worries and hopes into the blanks.

Christian Prayer for a New Year

Lord, you made this year before I saw its first morning, and you already know every day of it. I come to you a little tired and a little hopeful, with a list of things I am afraid of and a list of things I am longing for. Some of the changes ahead I have chosen. Others have simply arrived. Help me hold both with an open hand, trusting that nothing catches you by surprise.

Father, I ask you to guard my health and the health of the people I love. Be near to anyone facing a diagnosis, a hard treatment or a long recovery. Give me patience with my own body and my own limits. Steady my money, my work and my home, and where I cannot see a way forward, show me the next faithful step rather than the whole road. Teach me to rest on the Sabbath, even when the calendar is full.

Above all, let this year draw me closer to you. Where I have drifted, bring me back without shame. Where I have been stubborn, soften my heart. Let my relationships be marked by honesty, forgiveness and kindness, and let me be quick to speak your love where it is needed most. Whatever this year holds, let me meet it as your child. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this new year is yours before it is mine. I give you the days I can plan and the days I cannot. Keep my heart near to you, make my steps steady, and help me love the people in front of me well. Where I feel afraid, remind me that you are faithful. Teach me to trust you one day at a time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you look back on a hard past year and wonder whether the new one will be any different. Thank God that his mercy has not run out, and ask him to show you fresh mercy each morning of the coming months.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for wisdom about how you spend your days. Let it shape your resolutions into something less about productivity and more about living each day with a heart that is awake to him.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

When the new year feels like more of the same, pray this promise over your life. Ask God to open a path you have not yet noticed, and to help you watch for what he is already beginning.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Turn to this passage when your plans for the year feel uncertain. Ask the Lord to lean your own understanding toward his, and to make your path straight in the decisions you must make.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray these verses when worry about the year ahead starts to crowd out sleep. Bring each anxious thought to God as a specific request, and ask him to guard your heart with a peace that makes no sense on paper.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this on the first morning of the year, before the phone is picked up and before the day’s noise begins. Sit at a table with a cup of something warm, keep a pen nearby, and read the prayer slowly. If a line catches on something real in your life, stop there and say it to God in your own words.

You might also invite someone else to pray it with you, a spouse, a friend or a small group at church. Read it aloud, taking turns with each paragraph, and let each person add a name or concern at the end. Keep the prayer somewhere you will see it again in March or July, and return to it when the year begins to feel long.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this new year and walk beside you through every season of it. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and give you grace enough for each day as it comes. May you know his peace when the road is unclear, and may his faithfulness be the ground you stand on all year long.
