This night prayer is for a friend who is discouraged, worn down, or quietly losing hope. It is meant to be prayed in the evening, when the day is done and the mind is still turning over what went wrong or what feels unresolved. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words as you sit with your friend in prayer.

Night Prayer for a Discouraged Friend

Father, the day is ending, and we bring our friend to you as the light fades. You know the weight they have been carrying: the disappointments that piled up, the words that stung, the plans that did not work out, and the quiet fear that things will not get better. You see every tired thought at this hour, and nothing about their situation is hidden from you. Please meet them where they are, in the kitchen, in the car, in the bed they cannot seem to fall asleep in.

Lord, we ask you to lift the heaviness from their chest tonight. Quiet the voice that tells them they are failing or alone. Let them rest in the truth that you are near, that you do not grow weary, and that you have not stopped working even when they cannot see it. Give them sleep that actually restores, and wake them tomorrow with a little more strength than they have now, even if it is only enough for the next small step.

Guard them through the night from fear and from the lies that come loudest in the dark. Surround their home with your peace, and remind them that they do not have to solve everything before morning. We trust you with what they cannot carry, and we thank you for your faithfulness, which was there yesterday and will be there tomorrow. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is discouraged tonight and I do not know what else to say. Be near them now. Calm the fear that keeps them awake, lighten what they are carrying, and remind them that you have not left them. Give them rest, and let morning bring a little more hope than tonight did. Thank you that you are awake when we cannot be. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific ways your friend feels crushed or spirit-broken. Ask God to draw near in those exact places tonight, and thank him that his nearness is not conditional on their feelings being strong.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and imagine your friend setting down the load they have been carrying all day. Pray that they would actually hear Jesus’ invitation to rest, and that they would feel permission to stop striving for one night.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This is a verse about trusting God enough to sleep. Pray that your friend would be able to lie down in peace, not because their problems are gone, but because God is the one keeping watch over them.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray that God would give strength to the one who feels faint and weary. Ask him to restore what discouragement has drained, so your friend can face tomorrow without having to generate all the strength themselves.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray that your friend would see God’s mercies as new each morning, even when today has felt like the same struggle over and over. Ask the Lord to let them wake up expecting that his faithfulness is still waiting for them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer near the end of the day, after the lights are low and before you go to sleep. A chair by a window, the edge of the bed, or a quiet spot at the kitchen table all work well. Keeping a hand on your Bible, a cup of tea, or the phone you used to call or text your friend can help you stay focused and present while you speak.

If you can, pray it with your friend, either in person or on the phone, and let them hear you ask God for rest and hope on their behalf. Another good option is to invite a family member or another friend to pray the same words on the same night, so that your friend is being carried by more than one voice in the same hour.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord watch over your friend tonight and lift the weight from their heart. May they sleep deeply, wake gently, and find that the God who held them through the dark is still holding them in the morning light.
