This night prayer is for the hours after you have sat with a friend in grief, when the house is quiet and their loss is still fresh. Pray it at bedtime, either for yourself as you carry their sorrow or over your friend as you release them into God’s care. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for a Grieving Friend

Lord, the day is ending, and I am bringing you the weight of my friend’s sorrow. You know the empty chair at their table, the phone calls they dread making, and the sudden tears that come in the grocery aisle or the car. You know the nights that feel longest when someone is gone. Tonight I ask you to sit with them in the dark. Hold them when they cannot hold themselves, and let them feel that they are not alone in this room or in this grief.

I give you the thoughts that circle in their head at this hour, the what-ifs and the regrets and the questions with no answers. Quiet them. Where they are angry, receive their anger without judgment. Where they feel numb, be the warmth they cannot yet feel. Give them sleep that comes gently and rest that actually restores. Keep watch over their home and over the small everyday tasks that have become impossible. And keep me ready to show up tomorrow with a meal, a listening ear, or simply my presence. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my friend is hurting tonight and I cannot take the pain away. Wrap them in your peace and let them sleep without fear. Be near to them in the silence, and steady their breathing when grief rises. Give me wisdom for how to love them well tomorrow. Thank you that your presence does not leave when the house goes dark. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this over your friend as a reminder that God draws near to the brokenhearted, even when they cannot feel him. Ask him to make that nearness real to them tonight.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse as you lie down to rest, asking God to grant your friend the sleep that comes from trusting him with their sorrow. It is a good verse to whisper before closing your eyes.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring this invitation of Jesus to your friend in prayer, asking that they would come to him with their exhaustion and find real relief in his presence.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, naming the specific wounds your friend carries. Ask God to be the one who binds up what grief has torn open.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray that God would meet your friend in their suffering and that, in time, they would be able to comfort others with the comfort they have received. Ask God to make you a faithful companion in the process.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last quiet minutes before you turn out the light, sitting on the edge of your bed or in a comfortable chair. If you have a moment earlier in the evening, you might write your friend’s name on a small card and place it on your nightstand as a visual reminder to lift them up. Holding something in your hands, like a cup of tea or the card itself, can help your mind stay with the words instead of drifting to tomorrow’s list.

Consider inviting another person to pray this with you, whether that is a spouse, a roommate, or a member of your church who also knows your friend. Two people praying over one grieving person can carry more than either could alone, and it reminds everyone involved that the burden is shared before God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over the night keep your friend in his care and wrap them in a peace that the world cannot give. May they wake to find his mercy new again, and may you rest well, knowing you are held by the same faithful God.
