This night prayer for a student is written for the end of a long day of classes, homework, exams or the quiet worry that comes with a school term. Pray it at bedtime, once the books are closed and the phone is put away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Night Prayer for a Student
Lord, thank you for getting us through this day. Thank you for the classes we sat through, the questions we managed to answer, and the friends who made the hallways feel less lonely. Some of it went well and some of it did not. Whatever is still sitting on our minds tonight, we set it down in your hands. We do not need to finish the reading, solve the problem set, or rehearse the presentation again before we sleep. We ask you to quiet the racing thoughts and give us rest.
Watch over the student praying this prayer. Guard their sleep, their body and their heart through the night. If there is a test tomorrow, go before them into that room and steady their hands and their memory. If there is a friendship that has gone strange, a teacher who seems cold, or a grade that feels like a verdict on who they are, remind them that their worth is not measured by a score. Help them remember who they belong to. Let tomorrow come with enough strength for what is in front of them and no more than that. Thank you that you do not sleep, and that you keep watch while we rest. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and my mind will not slow down. Take the homework, the grades, and the people I am worried about, and hold them for me. Give me sleep tonight, and show me in the morning the next small step I need to take. Keep me safe while I rest. I trust you with what I cannot finish. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Read this slowly before you close your eyes. Thank God that sleep is a gift he gives, and that you can lie down without having to hold everything together on your own.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Pray this when the urge to stay up cramming or worrying is strong. Ask God to remind you that rest is not laziness, and that he cares for you even while you sleep.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Use this to hand over the specific worries from your day one at a time. Name each one to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Pray this as a request for protection through the night. Ask God to keep you awake when you need to be awake and to keep watch over you when you sleep.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
(WEB)
Bring this verse to God when your thoughts keep looping. Ask him to fix your mind on him, so that your anxious thoughts have less room to take over.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer in bed with the lights off, or sitting at the edge of your bed with your phone charging across the room. Try putting your hands on your chest or your knees as you speak, which can help slow your breathing. If you share a room, you can whisper it so you do not wake anyone. Keep it short if you are falling asleep quickly. A few honest sentences are enough.
If you have a parent, sibling, youth leader or friend you trust, ask them to pray this with you or for you. Some students find it helps to text a friend the prayer before bed so they know someone else is praying too. You can also write the prayer on a card and keep it on your desk, so it is there the next time the evening feels heavy.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord keep this student in his care tonight and lift their heart when the day has been hard. May they wake rested, with courage enough for the morning and peace that does not depend on how the exam turns out.
