This night prayer asks God to quiet the day’s noise and open your heart to learn, even while you rest. It is meant for the end of the day, when you are tired, when you replay conversations, and when you want to close your eyes without holding on to your own opinions. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit.

Night Prayer for a Teachable Spirit

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it really was. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. I was quick to defend myself when someone corrected me, and I was slow to admit where I had been wrong. Forgive me for the pride that hardens my heart. Forgive me for the times I wanted to be right more than I wanted to be truthful.

Teach me before I sleep. Let whatever I learned today settle in my mind, and show me what I missed while I was busy talking. Give me a listening heart tomorrow, one that hears a friend’s concern without rushing to answer, and one that can receive advice from my children, my coworkers, or my pastor without getting defensive. Soften the places in me that have grown stubborn.

Now I release the day into your hands. Guard my sleep, keep my family safe through the night, and let me wake with a readiness to learn. I trust you to finish the work you have started in me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I still have pride in me. Show me where I resisted correction today, and teach me to hear you more clearly than my own voice. Make my heart open and willing, and let me rest in your care tonight. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

Pray these words as a request for direction at the end of the day. Ask God to show you the path you missed, and to lead you in truth as you go to sleep, trusting that he is the teacher you need.

Proverbs 9:9

Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and ask whether you have been quick to shut out a rebuke today. Pray that God would make you wise enough to welcome correction, and grateful for anyone who offers it.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

Use this verse to examine your speech from the day. Ask God to slow your tongue and quicken your ears, so that tomorrow you listen first and speak with more care.

Psalm 143:10

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

(WEB)

This verse turns the prayer toward God as the one who teaches. Ask him to guide you in doing his will, and to hold you steady through the night so you can keep learning in the morning.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting it become a statement of trust. Ask God to give you rest, since a settled heart is better able to learn once the day begins again.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer after you have turned off the lights and before you fall asleep, ideally in the bed or the chair where you usually rest. If your hands are restless, hold a notebook and write down one thing you learned today and one moment when you resisted correction. Naming those two things makes the prayer specific and gives God something concrete to work with.

If you share a home, consider praying the shorter version aloud with a spouse, a roommate, or a child who is struggling to take advice. Hearing someone else admit their need to learn can make it easier for everyone at the table to stay humble, and it reminds the whole household that growing is a shared task.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who teaches the humble give this weary heart a quiet mind tonight. May he open your ears in the morning, steady your tongue, and make you glad to be corrected. May you sleep well, knowing you are still being taught, and wake ready to learn.
