This night prayer is for parents and caregivers who lie awake wondering whether their child is lonely, left out, or caught in a friendship that has gone sour. Pray it at bedtime, once the house is quiet and the day’s events are still fresh in your mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for Children’s Friendships

Father, the day is closing and my child is settling down for sleep. I bring you the friendships that fill their days: the kids they sat with at lunch, the ones they waited for at recess, the ones who laughed with them and the ones who did not. You know every text message they didn’t get back, every invitation that never came, every moment they felt small. Hold their heart tonight and tell them they are not forgotten.

Give my child good friends, and help them to be good friends in return. Where there has been hurt, soften it. Where there has been a falling out, open a door for an apology or a fresh start. Keep them from cruelty and from the quiet pull to exclude others to feel safe. Teach them to notice the child sitting alone and to make room. Protect them tonight from worry about tomorrow, and let them sleep knowing that you go before them into every playground and every classroom. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my child’s friendships are in your hands tonight. Be near them as they sleep, and heal any hurt from today. Give them a friend who is loyal and kind, and make them one too. Quiet their fears and help them rest. Thank you for knowing their name and for loving them more than any friend ever could. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your child’s social worries at night, asking God to be the refuge they can run to when friendships feel unsafe. It reminds you that his help is near even when peers are not.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to bring your child a faithful friend, someone who stays through the hard seasons. Pray that your child will also become that kind of friend to others.

Proverbs 18:24

A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God as a request for a close companion who sticks closer than a brother or sister might. Ask him to lead your child toward people who will encourage their faith.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Pray that your child will learn to honor others and to show affection to their friends. This verse can shape the way they treat classmates who are different from them.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly as you close the day, asking God to guard your child’s heart and mind from anxiety about friendships. Let the promise of his peace be what they carry into sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent time, such as after you have tucked your child in or while you sit on the edge of their bed with the lights low. If you are praying with your child, ask them one question first, like “Who made you laugh today?” or “Was there a moment you felt left out?” Let their answer shape the words you pray, and keep the prayer short enough that it does not become one more thing they must sit through.

Your hands can help you stay present. Rest one hand on your child’s back or hold a stuffed animal they treasure, or simply fold your hands together while you speak. Another parent, a grandparent, or a friend from church can pray this same prayer for your child on the nights when you are too tired to pray at all. Share the request with them so you are carrying the friendships together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your child with friends who love them well and with the courage to love others in return. May he keep them safe through the night and meet them with fresh mercy when morning comes. May they wake knowing they are known, held, and never alone.
