This evening prayer is for the end of a long day, when you are tired and want to hand what you carried back to God before you sleep. Pray it at bedtime, at the kitchen table after everyone has gone quiet, or in the car before you go inside. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.
Evening Prayer for Daily Strength
Lord, the day is ending and I am tired. I think about the conversations that went sideways, the work I did not finish, the message I still have not answered, and the worry I carried from the morning until now. I do not want to take any of it to bed with me. Please take it from my hands. Thank you for the strength you gave me when I needed it, even in the moments I did not notice. I see now that I did not get through this day on my own.
Be near to the people I love tonight. Watch over the ones who are sick, grieving, or lying awake with fear. Keep my home safe and my body rested. If I wake in the night with my mind racing, quiet it again and remind me that you are awake and I am not alone. Give me a tender heart toward the people who frustrated me today, and forgive me for the ways I fell short. Let my sleep be honest rest, not just escape from what is still unfinished.
Tomorrow will bring its own demands, and I do not yet have the strength for them. I trust that you will supply what I need when I need it. Fill me again in the morning, and until then, let me rest in you. Thank you for another day, and for the quiet of this night. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out and I give you the rest of this day. Take the worries I could not solve and the people I could not help. Steady my heart, guard my sleep, and watch over the ones I love. I trust you with what is left undone. Give me enough strength for what is ahead, and let me rest in your care tonight. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as you lie down, naming the restlessness you want God to still. It reminds you that peaceful sleep is a gift from the Lord, not something you must manufacture through effort.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Use this verse to release the habit of working late out of anxiety. Ask God to help you trust that he cares for what you cannot finish, and to give you rest.
Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
(WEB)
Read this slowly and bring your weariness to Jesus in your own words. Ask him to show you what his yoke looks like in the ordinary tasks you face tomorrow.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Pray this verse with gratitude for God’s mercy in the day now ending. Thank him that his compassion is renewed each morning, and ask for fresh eyes to see it.
Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.
(WEB)
Bring your exhaustion to God and ask him to give power to your weakness. This verse helps you pray honestly about feeling spent while trusting that strength comes from him.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular spot for evening prayer, such as your bedside, a favorite chair, or the place where you set down your keys and bag when you come home. Keep a small notebook nearby and write down one or two things you are handing to God, so the list does not stay only in your head. If you pray with a spouse, housemate, or friend, take turns reading a paragraph each and let the silence between sentences do its work.
If the day was painful or the night feels heavy, you can pray the shorter version slowly, pausing after each line. Some people find it helpful to rest a hand on their chest or open their palms as they pray, a physical way of letting go. You do not need to finish every line in one sitting. Stop when you feel settled, and trust that God hears the prayer even when your words run out.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who kept watch over your day keep watch over your night. May he calm the thoughts that keep you awake, meet you in the quiet, and bring you to morning rested and ready for what comes next.
