This night prayer for my father is written for the quiet hours before bed, when the day’s worries and the day’s conversations are still on your mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it gives you a simple way to hand your father to God before you close your eyes.

Night Prayer for My Father

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring my father to you as the light goes out. You know the weight he carried today, the things he worried about at work, at home, and in his own body. You know the words that were said and the ones that were left unsaid. I ask you to take those burdens from his hands and hold them for him while he sleeps.

Father, watch over him through the night. If his mind races or his chest feels tight, settle him with your peace. If pain keeps him awake, be near to him in it. If he has fears about his health, his money, his future, or the people he loves, remind him that you have not stopped caring for him. Give him rest that is deep enough to restore his body and his spirit.

Thank you for the good things from this day, even the small ones: a meal shared, a kind word, a moment of laughter. Protect him from harm, guard his going out and his coming in, and let him wake tomorrow with strength and a willing heart. Keep him close to you, Lord, and let him know he is never alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I give my father to you tonight. Calm his worries, ease his body, and give him rest. Guard him from fear and harm while he sleeps, and remember the good things he did today. Let him wake refreshed and close to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse over your father as a declaration of trust. Ask God to let him lie down in peace and sleep without fear, because the Lord keeps him safe even when he cannot keep watch himself.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Speak this verse slowly for your father. Thank God that he is watched over through the night, and ask that his rest would be guarded by the one who never sleeps.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release your father’s endless striving. Ask God to remind him that rest is a gift from his hand, and that he does not have to earn his sleep through anxious effort.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your father’s exhaustion to Jesus in prayer. Ask the Lord to draw him in, lift the heavy load he carries, and give him a rest that goes deeper than tiredness.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the worries your father has not spoken aloud. Ask that his anxious thoughts would be handed over to God, and that a peace beyond understanding would settle over his heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, once your father has gone to bed or as you sit with him before lights out. If you live apart, set a regular time each night, such as after the news or before you turn off your own lamp, and pray for him at that same moment. Sitting in a quiet chair with a cup of tea or holding a small object in your hands can help you slow down and focus your thoughts.

You might also invite someone else to pray with you, such as another family member, a friend, or a pastor who knows your father. Praying together can lift a weight that feels too heavy to carry alone. If your father is awake and willing, you could read the prayer aloud at his bedside and let him add his own words at the end.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your father in his going out and his coming in. May he lie down tonight and find real rest, and may he wake tomorrow knowing he is loved, held, and never forgotten by God. The peace of Christ guard his heart and mind through the night.
