This short prayer is for a congregation: for its leaders, its members, its visitors, and the ministries that depend on ordinary faithfulness. Pray it on a Sunday morning before the service begins, during a weekday meeting, or as you drive past the building and think of the people inside. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words what your church is facing this week.
Short Prayer for Our Church
Lord, you are the head of the church, and we come to you on behalf of the people who gather in your name. We thank you for the community you have built here, for the familiar faces, the children running down the hallway, the older members who have prayed for this place for decades, and the newcomers who walked in nervous and stayed. Thank you for every meal shared, every visit to a hospital room, and every quiet act of kindness that no one else saw.
We ask you to be near to our pastors and staff. Give them rest when they are weary, wisdom when decisions are hard, and a clear sense of your calling when criticism comes. Strengthen the volunteers who teach, greet, cook, and clean, and keep them from burning out. Draw in those who have drifted away, and open our hearts to the strangers who will walk through our doors next Sunday. Help us to be honest with one another, patient in our disagreements, and generous with what we have. Let our church be a place where your love is easy to find. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, bless our church today. Protect our leaders, strengthen our members, and send your Spirit among us. Help us love one another well and welcome those who are new or lonely. Give us wisdom where we are unsure and courage where we are afraid. Let people see you in the way we treat each other. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray for their church early in the day, before the week’s demands begin. Sit somewhere quiet, perhaps with a cup of coffee, and read the prayer slowly. If you can, keep the church directory, a bulletin, or a list of current prayer requests beside you so you can name real people and needs as you go. Pausing after each paragraph to let the words sink in can turn a short prayer into a longer conversation.
Consider inviting others to pray it with you, whether a small group, a family at the dinner table, or a friend who serves on a ministry team. Praying the same words together reminds everyone that the church belongs to God and that no one carries it alone. You might also write the prayer on a card and place it somewhere you will see it during the week, so the church stays on your heart beyond Sunday.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless the people of this church and keep them. May his face shine upon them and his peace settle over every household, every ministry, and every heart that feels weary this week. May the grace of Jesus be known among them, and may they go out from this place strengthened to love the world around them.
