This night prayer for my home is for the close of the day, when the dishes are drying, the lights are going off room by room, and you want to hand the house and everyone in it to God before you sleep. Pray it in the evening or at bedtime, reading it aloud as written or using it as a starting point for your own words.
Night Prayer for My Home
Lord, you are the one who keeps watch when we cannot. As the day ends, I bring you this home and the people who live in it. Thank you for the roof over our heads, the beds we are about to climb into, and the ordinary mercies of this day: the meal we shared, the laughter in the hallway, the work that got finished and the work that did not. Forgive us for the sharp words, the hurried moments, and the times we forgot that this house belongs to you.
Be present in every room tonight. Settle the worries that followed us home from work and school. Quiet the thoughts that keep circling about money, about health, about the phone call we are still waiting on. Where there is grief in this house, comfort it. Where there is tension between us, soften it, and give us the grace to make things right in the morning. Guard our going out and our coming in, and keep harm far from our doors.
Give us rest that is real, sleep that restores body and spirit alike. Let anyone who is awake in the night feel near to you. Protect the children, the aging, the ones who are sick, and the ones who are away from home tonight. Make this house a place of peace and welcome, and let it be known as a place where you are honored. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, thank you for this home and for the people in it. I release the day to you and ask you to keep watch over every room tonight. Calm the worries we are carrying, forgive what we did wrong, and give us sleep that refreshes us. Guard our doors and our hearts until morning. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
Pray this verse by admitting that the house cannot stand on your own strength. Name the parts of your home you are trying to hold together by effort alone, and ask the Lord to build and guard them.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Read this slowly as you turn off the lights. Let it become your own declaration that you can lie down in peace, trusting that rest is a gift God gives and not something you must earn.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Pray this over each person sleeping under your roof, one by one if you can. Thank God that the one who watches over Israel does not drift off, and ask him to keep each of them safe through the dark hours.
Psalm 91:1
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
(WEB)
Use this verse to name the home as a place of shelter. Ask God to make your house a dwelling where people feel safe, and to be the one they return to in every season.
Joshua 24:15
If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
(WEB)
Pray this as a family or household commitment. Ask God to help everyone in the home choose to serve him daily, in the small decisions of ordinary life as well as the big ones.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed moment, such as after the last dish is put away or once the house has gone quiet, and pray in the same spot each night if you can. Walking slowly through the rooms while you pray, pausing at the kitchen table, the children’s doorways, and the front door, can help you bring each part of the house before God in turn.
If others live with you, invite them to join in a sentence or two, or simply to say amen at the end. Those who live alone can pray it aloud to remind themselves that the home is not theirs alone to guard. Keep a short list of specific names and needs beside your bed so you remember what to bring to God when your mind goes blank.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who watches over this home keep every person who sleeps beneath its roof. May his peace settle into each room, and may you wake rested, held, and ready for the morning he has already prepared.
