This is a prayer for safe travels, written for the moments before a trip begins: the drive to the airport, the flight, a long road ahead, or a child heading off on their first journey without you. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names, destinations and worries into it. It works just as well in a parked car as at the kitchen table.

Prayer for Safe Travels

Father, I bring this journey to You before I take a single step toward it. You know every road, every runway and every mile between here and where we are going. I ask You to go ahead of us and make the way smooth, to keep the vehicle sound and the drivers alert, and to guard us from accidents, illness and the sudden surprises that can turn a simple trip into a crisis. Watch over the ones who are traveling with me and the ones who are staying behind, and keep our hearts steady if the plans change.

Lord, I confess that I feel anxious about being away, about what might go wrong and about whether I have forgotten something important. Quiet that fear and remind me that You are already present in every place we will reach. Give patience to the people we meet along the way, wisdom to the ones who make decisions for us, and peace to me when I have no control over the schedule. Let us arrive safely, and let us arrive grateful. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, keep us safe on this trip. Go before us on every road and in every sky, and walk beside us the whole way. Protect the driver, the passengers and everyone we will pass along the route. Calm my nerves, steady my hands and bring us home to the people who are waiting for us. Thank You that You never leave us on the way. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a promise over your going and your coming. Ask God to guard every departure and every return, not only this trip but the ones that follow. It speaks to the whole rhythm of travel, from leaving home to walking back through the door.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the specific dangers that worry you on the road or in the air. Ask God to send His angels to guard the path you will take. Pray it slowly, picturing the people you love being kept in that protection.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

When the route is unfamiliar or the decisions feel heavy, pray this verse and ask God to show you where to turn and when to slow down. It turns travel into a conversation with the One who knows the way.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when you are facing a stretch that feels dangerous, such as a storm, a mountain pass or a crowded station. Ask Him to be with you in the difficult parts, not only to spare you from them. Let the words steady you as you go.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray these verses when you are tempted to plan every detail and worry about what you cannot control. Ask God to direct your steps and your choices along the way. Trust Him with the parts of the trip you cannot see yet.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it in the last few minutes before you leave, ideally before you start the car or walk to the gate. Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as the car keys, a boarding pass or a child’s hand, so that the words stay connected to the actual movement you are about to make. If you are traveling with others, invite one of them to pray the shorter version over the group.

You can also ask someone who is staying behind to pray this prayer for you while you are away. Many people find it helpful to pray it again at the midpoint of a long trip or when they stop for the night. Tell the people you love that you are praying for them too, so that the prayer runs in both directions.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and behind you, and surround you with His protection on every road and in every sky. May He keep your feet from stumbling, your heart from fear, and bring you safely to the people who are waiting to welcome you home.
