A night prayer for our nation is a way to hand the country, its leaders, and its people over to God before you go to sleep. Pray it in the evening, once the day’s news has settled, when you are ready to set down your worries and rest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for Our Nation

Lord, as this day ends, we bring our nation before you. You know every street and every home across this land, and you know the hearts of the people who live in them. We confess that we have often been anxious about the state of things, angry at one another, and quick to assume the worst. Forgive us, and quiet the noise in our minds so we can pray with honest hearts.

We ask for wisdom for those who govern us, for judges, teachers, police, nurses, and everyone who carries responsibility for others. Where there is injustice, bring it into the light and make a way for truth. Where families are struggling with bills, hunger, or fear of losing their homes, be near them tonight. Comfort the grieving, steady the sick, and watch over those who are working late or sleeping in unfamiliar places.

Protect us through the night, Father. Guard our borders, our cities, and our small towns, and keep us from violence and harm. Let us wake tomorrow with a little more mercy and a little more courage to do good. We rest in your faithfulness and trust you with what we cannot fix ourselves. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you hold our nation in your hands. Be with those who lead and those who serve, with the weary and the worried, and with every family trying to get some sleep tonight. Give us peace where there is fear, and give us kindness where there is anger. Keep us safe until morning, and help us trust you with what is beyond our control. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Let this verse be the sentence you whisper when your mind keeps circling national worries. Ask God to make you lie down in safety, trusting him with the country while you rest.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this verse to remember that the nation does not rest on your vigilance alone. Name the leaders and neighbors you are concerned about, and entrust them to the one who watches over the city.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges prayer for everyone in authority, so use this passage to pray by name for officials, judges, and public servants. Ask that the whole community might live quietly and peacefully.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie in bed, letting the image of God who does not sleep steady your heart. Thank him that the nation is watched over even when you are unconscious.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

Jeremiah told exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived and to pray for it. Pray this for your own town and country, asking God to bring blessing where you live.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time in the evening, after the last news report and before you turn out the light. Sit on the edge of your bed or at the kitchen table with a cup of tea, and hold something in your hands, such as a Bible or a small object, to keep your attention from drifting. Pray slowly, pausing after each request to let it sink in.

You might also invite someone to pray it with you, a spouse, a child, or a friend on the phone. Families can take turns adding one concern each, or a neighborhood group can pray the same words at the same hour. Keep the prayer short if you are tired; a few honest sentences offered faithfully are enough.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps Israel neither slumber nor sleep watch over this nation and over every soul who rests within it. May he grant peace to the anxious, rest to the weary, and wisdom to those who lead. May she sleep well tonight, knowing she is held by a God who is never far away.
