Numbers 6 teaches children that God gave His people a special blessing, and that He wants to bless them. It is a lesson for children ages 5 to 11, and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God loves to bless His people, and He keeps His promises to take care of them. When we belong to Him, He watches over us and smiles on us.

Memory Verse

Numbers 6:24

‘The LORD bless you, and keep you.

(WEB)

Put your hands together in front of your chest, then slowly open them out toward the children as you say “The LORD bless you and keep you.” Ask the children to copy the motion, and say the words together three times.

The Story: Numbers 6 for Kids

God spoke to Moses and told him to share some special rules with the people of Israel. Some people chose to set themselves apart just for God for a while. These people were called Nazirites, and they made a special promise to God. They did not drink wine or eat grapes, and they let their hair grow long without cutting it.

Nazirites also had to stay away from dead bodies, even the bodies of people they loved. This showed that they were focused on God and holy to Him. When their promise was over, they brought gifts to the Tent of Meeting, where God’s people went to worship Him. The priest helped them with their offerings.

God gave Moses a blessing for Aaron and his sons to speak over the people. Moses told Aaron, “This is how you shall bless the children of Israel.” The blessing said that God would bless and keep His people. God told them that He would be gracious to them and give them peace.

God said, “I will bless them.” These words show that God wanted His people to know that He was near and that He cared for them. He promised to keep His name on them, so they would belong to Him.

Read It Together

Numbers 6:3

He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink. He shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of fermented drink, neither shall he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or dried.

(WEB)

Point out that a Nazirite chose to give up some good things for a while, so they could focus on God. Ask the children what it means to give something up to show love for God.

Numbers 6:5

“‘All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall come on his head, until the days are fulfilled, in which he separates himself to the LORD. He shall be holy. He shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

(WEB)

Show the children that the Nazirite was called holy because he belonged to God. Explain that being holy means being set apart for God, and that God is holy too.

Numbers 6:25-26

25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

Point out the picture of God’s face shining on us, which means He is pleased with us and kind to us. Ask the children to tell what it looks like when someone smiles at them.

Talk About It

  • What did God want the Nazirites to focus on while they kept their special promise?
  • Why do you think God wanted His people to be set apart for Him?
  • What does it mean to you that God wants to bless you?
  • How can you show God that you belong to Him at home or at school?
  • When you feel scared or tired, what can you remember about God keeping you safe?

Activity Ideas

Blessing Hand Craft

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Have each child trace their hand on the paper and cut it out. On each finger, have them write or draw one thing God gives them, such as family, food, or friends. Let them take the hand home as a reminder of God’s blessing.

Shine Your Face Game

Gather the children in a circle and have one child stand in the middle with their eyes closed. The other children take turns walking quietly up and gently touching the middle child’s shoulder while saying “God bless you.” After everyone has a turn, the middle child guesses who blessed them last. This helps children remember that God’s blessing is spoken with love.

Blessing Cards for Home

You will need index cards, a pencil, and a small envelope for each child. Help each child write the words “The LORD bless you and keep you” on a card and decorate it with drawings. Ask them to give the card to a family member at home and say the blessing out loud. This helps the children practice blessing others, just as God blessed His people.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Numbers 6 shows that God wants His people to belong to Him, and He gives a beautiful blessing to remind them of His presence and peace. The Nazirite vow is a picture of devotion, and the priestly blessing shows God’s desire to keep His people close. Christians read this blessing as a reminder that God’s grace and peace are available to all who trust Him.

Avoid suggesting to children that God blesses only those who keep special promises or rules. The blessing in this chapter is given by God’s grace and is not a reward for perfect behavior. Keep the focus on God’s love and faithfulness rather than on the Nazirite’s personal sacrifices.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for loving us and keeping us close to You. Help us to remember that You bless us and watch over us every day. Make us kind to others, so they can see Your love in us. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
