This Psalm 48 Sunday school lesson teaches children that God is a strong place of safety, and he keeps his people even when frightening things happen. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God is our safe place. When we are scared, we can run to him, because he is strong and he always keeps his people.

Memory Verse

Psalm 48:1

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.

(WEB)

Cup both hands together in front of your chest, then lift them high over your head like a big wave. Say “Great is the LORD” as you lift, and bring your hands down slowly while you say “greatly to be praised.” Do this motion each time you say the verse together.

The Story: Psalm 48 for Kids

Long ago, the people of God lived in a city called Zion, and God’s holy mountain stood right beside it. The city was beautiful, and people from all over the earth heard about how wonderful it was. The people in Zion loved their city because God lived there with them.

One day, some kings from other countries gathered together and came marching toward Zion. They looked up at the strong walls and tall towers. When they saw how well the city was protected, they were amazed. They were frightened, and they turned around and ran away as fast as they could.

The people of Zion did not have to fight those kings alone. God was their strong place of safety, and he kept them safe. The people had heard stories about God’s power, and now they had seen it with their own eyes. Their hearts were full of joy.

The writer of this psalm told the people to walk all around the city. He asked them to count the towers and look carefully at the strong walls. He wanted them to remember how God had kept them safe, so they could tell their children about it later. “Tell the next generation,” he said, so the story would never be forgotten.

The psalm ends by reminding everyone that this God is their God forever. He will guide his people all the way through life, and he will stay with them even to the very end. The people could trust him every day.

Read It Together

Psalm 48:3

God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge.

(WEB)

Point out that God is called a refuge, which means a safe place to run to. Ask the children what a safe place feels like to them, such as a warm bed, a parent’s hug, or a home with a locked door.

Psalm 48:9

We have thought about your loving kindness, God, in the middle of your temple.

(WEB)

Explain that the people thought about God’s loving kindness while they were in his house. Show that thinking about God’s love is something we can do in church, at home, or anywhere we pray.

Psalm 48:14

For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death.

(WEB)

Point out the words “forever and ever” and “our guide.” Tell the children that God does not leave us, and he leads us every single day of our lives.

Talk About It

  • What is something that makes you feel safe when you are scared?
  • Why do you think the kings ran away when they saw Zion?
  • How can you tell someone about the good things God has done for you?
  • When you feel afraid, what is one thing you could say to God?
  • How do you think it helps to remember God’s strength on hard days?

Activity Ideas

Build a Strong Tower Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a tall city wall with towers along the top, then color the towers bright colors. As they draw, have them write or draw one way God keeps them safe inside the walls. Hang the finished pictures on the wall as a reminder that God is strong.

Safe Place Freeze Game

You will need an open space and a chair or blanket to act as the safe place. Call out “Kings are coming!” and the children run around the room. When you call out “Run to God!” they race to the safe place and freeze. Play a few rounds and talk about how God is always the place we can go.

Tower Count Card at Home

You will need an index card, a pen, and a small piece of tape. Write Psalm 48:1 on the card and tape it near the front door or on the fridge. Each day, ask the child to walk around the house, count three things that make them feel safe, and say thank you to God. Send the card home so the family can keep reading it together.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 48 celebrates God as the faithful protector of his people and the city where he is worshiped. The psalm points to God’s presence, power, and steadfast love as the true foundation of security, not the walls or towers themselves. It also invites the community to remember God’s past deliverance so they can pass that faith to the next generation.

When teaching children, avoid suggesting that God will always stop bad things from happening to us in the same way he protected Zion. Instead, focus on the truth that God is with us and guides us through every situation, even when hard things come.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for being our strong and safe place. When we feel scared, help us remember that you are with us. Thank you for leading us every day, and help us tell others about your love. Amen.
