This prayer is for the moment when your thoughts will not settle, when worry runs ahead of the day and your mind keeps circling the same fears. You can pray it in the morning before the day fills up, late at night when sleep will not come, or in the middle of a tense hour. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for a Calm Mind

Lord, my mind is loud this morning. I keep rehearsing conversations that have not happened yet and imagining outcomes I cannot control. The list of what I must do grows longer while I stand here, and my chest feels tight before I have even started. I do not know how to quiet it on my own, and I am tired of trying to carry every thought as if it were mine to solve.

So I bring it to you, all of it: the bills, the health question I keep avoiding, the friend I am worried about, the work I feel I am failing at. Settle what is unsettled in me. Slow my thoughts the way a tide slows when the moon moves on. Where my fears are reaching for things beyond my reach, call me back to what is true today and to what I can actually do in the next hour. Teach me to notice when I am spiraling and to come back to you again and again without shame.

I receive your peace, not as the absence of problems but as your presence in the middle of them. Let my mind rest in you, and let my body follow. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my thoughts are racing and I cannot catch them. Slow my breathing and quiet my mind. Show me the one thing in front of me that needs doing, and help me leave the rest with you. I trust you with what I cannot hold. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Pray these words when anxiety feels like it has taken over. Name each worry to God in turn, then ask for the peace that Paul says will guard your heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

Use this verse to fix your attention on God rather than on the spiral of what-ifs. Pray it slowly and let your trust in him become the place your thoughts return to.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When your mind is frantic, this verse invites you to stop and acknowledge that God is God. Pray it as a deliberate pause, letting the stillness it describes begin in you.

Matthew 11:28-29

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

Jesus speaks to the weary and burdened in these words. Bring your exhaustion to him, and ask him to teach you the gentler pace of life that he offers.

Psalm 94:19

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when many anxious thoughts crowd in at once. Thank God for the comfort he gives, and ask him to let that comfort reach the places where worry is strongest.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can sit quietly for a few minutes, such as before you check your phone in the morning or in the car before going into work. Sit with your feet on the floor and your hands open in your lap, or hold something warm like a cup of tea. Pray the main prayer once, then pause after each sentence to notice whether your breathing has changed. Let the pauses be part of the prayer.

You might also ask someone you trust to pray this with you, or to pray it over you on a hard day. Hearing another person speak these words can steady a mind that struggles to hold them alone. If your anxiety is severe or lasts for weeks, talk with a doctor or counselor alongside your prayer, because God often works through good care and wise people.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who calms the sea fill your mind with his quiet. May your thoughts rest in his faithfulness today, and may his peace guard what you cannot guard yourself.
