This prayer is for a church leader: a pastor, elder, deacon, worship leader, or anyone who carries responsibility for a congregation. Pray it when you are thinking about someone who preaches, counsels, or makes hard decisions for the church, especially on a Sunday morning, during a week of conflict, or when you simply notice how tired they look. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Prayer for a Church Leader

Lord, you know the people who lead your church by name, and you know the weight they carry when no one else is looking. We bring them to you today. Give them wisdom when a decision has no clear answer, and give them courage when the right word is hard to say. Guard their families from the strain that ministry can place on a home, and give their spouses and children rest, encouragement, and a sense of being loved for who they are, not only for what their father or husband or mother does at church.

Keep their hearts close to yours. When criticism comes, let it sharpen them rather than wound them, and let them hear your voice above the noise of opinions. When they feel unqualified, remind them that you chose them and that your strength is made perfect in weakness. Give them sleep when they are anxious, joy in the small victories no one thanks them for, and friends who will pray for them honestly. Refresh them in the places where they pour themselves out, so that they do not run dry in the work you have given them.

Lead your people through them, Father, and let your church grow in love, unity, and faithfulness. Use these leaders to point others to Jesus, not to themselves, and make their lives a quiet witness to your grace. We ask this in the name of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless the leaders of our church today. Give our pastor and elders wisdom for what is in front of them, peace in their homes, and courage to speak your truth with love. Protect them from discouragement and pride, and let them feel your presence close by. Strengthen them to keep serving your people faithfully. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your leaders by asking God to help the congregation support them with gratitude rather than grumbling, and to help the leaders themselves keep a clear account of their calling before him.

1 Timothy 3:1

This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God that people are still willing to take up the work of overseeing a church, and asking him to keep that desire pure, rooted in service rather than status.

Ephesians 4:11-13

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…

(WEB)

Pray this passage for your leaders as those God gave to equip the body. Ask that they would be used to build up the church until everyone grows into maturity and unity in Christ.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by confessing that no church leader can build the work alone. Ask God to be the builder, and to free your pastor and elders from the belief that everything depends on them.

Acts 20:28

Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking the Holy Spirit to keep your leaders alert to the flock entrusted to them, and to remind them that the church belongs to God, who bought it with his own blood.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as early in the morning before the day fills up, or on the evening before a Sunday service. Sit somewhere quiet with a pen nearby, and if a name comes to mind while you pray, write it in the margin of this page or in your journal. Some people find it helps to hold a cup of coffee or a Bible in their hands, giving the body something to do while the mind settles.

Invite others to pray with you. A small group, a family dinner table, or a text thread among friends from church can all become places where this prayer is spoken together. Ask your leader, with their permission, what they most need prayer for this week, and let their answer shape the words you use. Praying with them, rather than only about them, can make the prayer feel less like a duty and more like friendship.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who called your leaders keep them steady and make his face shine upon them. May he give them rest when they are weary, joy in their labor, and a family that feels cared for. May the people of your church rise up beside them in love, and may the work of God flourish through their faithfulness.
