This prayer is for the moments when fear takes hold of your thoughts and your body, whether the fear is about a diagnosis, a conversation you dread, money, a child, or a future you cannot see. You can pray it in the early morning, in the car before walking into a difficult place, or late at night when sleep will not come. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for Overcoming Fear

Lord, I come to you because I am afraid. My mind keeps running ahead to what might go wrong, and my chest feels tight before I have even finished the first thought. I worry about the things I cannot control, and I lie awake rehearsing outcomes that may never happen. Father, you already know every one of these fears by name. Nothing in my life surprises you, and nothing has ever caught you off guard.

So I ask you to steady my heart. Quiet the voice that tells me I am alone with this. Remind me of what is true about your character: that you are present, that you are faithful, and that you keep your promises even when I cannot see how. Help me set down the weight I was never meant to carry by myself. Give me courage for the next step, and trust for the step after that. Teach me to bring each new worry to you as soon as it appears instead of letting it grow in the dark.

I place my fear in your hands now. I do not ask you to explain everything to me, only to be with me in it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am afraid right now, and I do not want to carry this alone. Steady my breathing and my thoughts. Remind me that you are near, that you have not left me, and that I can trust you with what I cannot fix. Give me enough courage for this next minute, and I will bring you the next one after that. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Read this slowly and let each promise be spoken back to God as your own request. Name the specific fear in front of you and ask him to fulfill these words in that exact place.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

Pray this when fear first rises. Admit the fear plainly, then deliberately choose to put your trust in God as a decision you make again each time.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to turn anxious thoughts into specific prayers. Bring each request to God with thanksgiving, and ask him to guard your heart and mind with his peace.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Pray this to remember that the fear you feel does not come from God. Ask him to fill you with the power, love, and self-discipline he has already given you.

Psalm 34:4

I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

(WEB)

Pray this as a testimony of seeking. Tell God you are looking to him now, and ask him to answer and deliver you from the fears that have pressed in on you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still for a few minutes, such as before you get out of bed or while you sit in your parked car before work. Keep your hands open in your lap or rest one palm on your chest as you pray, so your body can join your words. If you have a notebook, write down the specific fears you name and leave a space to note when God brings peace or direction.

You can also pray this prayer with someone you trust. Ask a friend, spouse, or pastor to read it over you slowly, or take turns praying the sentences aloud. Hearing another person speak these words can make them feel less like a private struggle and more like a shared burden being lifted.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every uncertain place and stand beside you when the news is hard. May his peace guard the heart that has been racing and steady the mind that cannot rest. Let fear lose its grip on you one day at a time, and may you know that you are held.
