This short morning prayer is for the start of a day when your body feels worn down, your energy is low, or you are carrying a sickness of your own or someone else’s. It is best prayed first thing, before the phone, the news, or the to-do list takes hold, though it works just as well over coffee or in the car before work. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same needs.

Short Morning Prayer for Strength and Healing

Lord, I wake up today and the first thing I notice is how tired I am. My body aches, my mind is already tallying what I have to get through, and I am not sure I have enough in me for the hours ahead. So I am asking you for strength that is bigger than mine. Give me enough energy to get out of bed, to make breakfast for the kids, to answer the emails, and to sit with the people I will meet today without snapping at them. Steady my hands for the tasks that need care, and quiet the fear that rises when I think about the doctor’s report or the test results I am still waiting on.

Father, I also bring you the body that needs healing. Touch the places that hurt, the tissue that is inflamed, the medicine that is not yet working, the sleep that will not come. Be near to the person in my life who is sick, and to the ones who are caring for them and running on empty. Help me to rest when rest is what I need, and to ask for help without feeling ashamed of needing it. Let today be a day where I do not have to carry everything alone, because you are already carrying me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired before the day has even started. Give me the strength I cannot find on my own, and heal what is weak in me and in the people I love. Help me to take the next step with you, one hour at a time. Be my rest when I have none and my hope when the news is hard. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel completely drained and wonder how you will make it through the day. Ask God to give you the power you lack, and thank him that he does not wait for you to be strong before he helps.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the wounds you can see and the ones you cannot. Name specific hurts out loud, whether in your body, your heart, or a relationship, and ask God to bind them up as only he can.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when fear is the first thing you feel on waking. Pray it over the appointment or conversation you are dreading today, asking God to be the one who holds you steady through it.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(WEB)

When your body or heart feels like it is failing, let this verse shift your focus to God as your ongoing source. Ask him to be your strength today, not only in a crisis but in the ordinary hours of an ordinary day.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for someone who is sick, including yourself. Ask God to raise them up and to meet them with the prayers of the people around them, trusting that he hears and acts in his own good way and time.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before you pick up your phone or check your messages, while you are still sitting on the edge of the bed or standing at the kitchen sink. Keep a glass of water or a cup of tea in your hands as you pray, so that your body has something gentle to do while your mind settles. If you are praying for someone who is ill, write their name on a sticky note and place it where you will see it during the day, as a reminder to keep praying for them.

You can also pray this prayer with a spouse, a friend, or a family member who is caring for someone sick. Take turns reading the lines, or pray the first paragraph together and the second one separately. Praying together in the morning can make the day feel less heavy and remind you both that you are not walking through the healing process alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give strength to your weary body and steady your heart for whatever the day brings. May he bring healing to what hurts and peace to what is anxious. May you feel his nearness in the small moments, and may you rest in the knowledge that he is faithful to finish what he has begun in you.
