These prayers are written for the journey ahead, whether that means a new job, a move to a new city, a season of treatment, a long drive, a child leaving home, or a road you have not yet learned to walk. Pray them in the quiet before a big day, at the kitchen table with coffee going cold, or in the car before you turn the key. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Prayers for the Journey Ahead
Lord, you already know the road in front of me, every turn I can see and every bend I cannot. I confess that some of my fears are loud this morning: fear of what I will find, fear that I am not strong enough, fear of failing the people who are counting on me. Help me set those fears down and pick up trust instead. Go before me into each unknown hour, and steady my steps when the path feels steep.
Give me wisdom for the decisions I will face along the way, the small ones and the ones that will change everything. When I am tired, renew my strength. When I am tempted to hurry ahead or to turn back, slow my heart and show me the next faithful step. Keep my family and friends safe, and surround them with your presence while I am away from them or carrying something heavy for them. Let me travel light, leaning on you more than on my own plans. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am heading into something I cannot see clearly. Go ahead of me, walk beside me, and stay with me when I am tired or afraid. Give me the next right step and the courage to take it. Keep the people I love in your care while I am gone or while I am carrying this. Thank you that I am never traveling alone. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 121:7-8
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
(WEB)
Pray these words over the places you will go and the people you will leave behind. Ask God to guard your going out and your coming in, not only for today but for every stage of what lies ahead.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
When the road is unclear, this passage invites you to stop relying only on what you can figure out. Offer your plans to God and ask him to make the way straight where you cannot see it yourself.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Read this slowly when fear rises about what is ahead. Let the promise that God is with you and strengthens you become the sentence you return to whenever your thoughts start racing forward.
Joshua 1:9
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
(WEB)
Joshua received this charge just before he entered a land he had never seen. Pray it as a reminder that courage is rooted in God’s presence rather than in your own confidence about the outcome.
Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.
(WEB)
This verse is a promise of guidance from the Lord himself. Pray it when you are unsure which way to turn, asking God to instruct you and to keep his eye on you as you move forward.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time when you can be still for a few minutes, perhaps before you leave the house, before a flight, or on the first morning of a new season. Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a set of car keys, a worn Bible, a letter, or a cup of tea, so your body remembers that you are offering this journey to God rather than gripping it. Pray slowly and pause between the sentences that touch your fears.
You might also invite someone else to pray it with you, a spouse, a friend, or a small group, or ask them to pray it for you while you are away. Write the prayer on a card and keep it in your bag or your wallet, so you can read it again at a red light, in a waiting room, or in the middle of the night when the road feels longest.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you and make the way clear. May he walk beside you through every uncertain mile and keep you in his peace when the road grows hard. May the people who love you be held in his care while you are apart, and may you arrive, in his time, with a heart that has learned to trust him more deeply along the way.
