This short morning prayer is for asking God to soften your heart before the day’s first conversations, errands and frustrations begin. Pray it as soon as you are awake, before you check your phone, or while you make your coffee. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your day feels heavier or more specific.

Short Morning Prayer for Compassion

Lord, I am waking up to a day I have not fully planned, and I already know there will be people in it who are tired, rude, grieving or simply hard to be around. Before I step out the door, I ask you to make my heart tender toward them. Help me notice the coworker who snapped at me yesterday may be carrying something I cannot see. Help me hear the child who asks for the fourth time, the cashier who looks worn out, and the friend whose text sounds flat.

Give me patience when my schedule feels crowded and my own needs feel loud. When I am tempted to judge quickly or move past someone without seeing them, slow me down. Let my words be kind even when I am rushed, and let my hands be ready to help when help is needed. Remind me that I have been shown mercy by you again and again, and let that mercy spill over into how I treat others today.

Father, go before me into this day. Open my eyes to the people you place in my path, and give me the courage to respond with love instead of irritation. I trust you to hold what I cannot carry and to fill what feels empty in me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, make my heart soft today. Show me who needs kindness before I have time to think about it, and give me the grace to offer it. When I feel impatient, remind me how patiently you have treated me. Help me see people as you see them, and let compassion lead my words and my actions. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Paul names compassion as something to put on deliberately, like clothing you choose each morning. As you pray this, ask God to help you dress yourself in tenderness before you leave home, so that it is ready when someone needs it.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses remind you that God’s mercies are renewed every morning, which is a fitting promise to read when you are asking for mercy for others. Thank him for the fresh supply of compassion he gives each day, and ask him to pour it through you.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what God asks of his people in three simple parts, including loving kindness. Pray this verse by asking God to help you act justly, show mercy, and walk humbly with him in your interactions today.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul connects kindness and tenderheartedness to the forgiveness Christians have received. Use this verse in prayer to ask for the willingness to be gentle with someone who has hurt you or who is difficult to love this morning.

Matthew 9:36

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.

(WEB)

Here Jesus looks at the crowds and feels compassion because they seem worn out and without direction. Pray this as a request to see the people around you with the same clear, caring eyes, especially those who seem lost or weary.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a spot where you can pause for a minute before the day rushes in, such as the edge of the bed, a chair by the window, or the kitchen counter while the kettle heats. Holding a warm mug or your own hands folded in your lap can help you slow down and focus on the words. If you have a Bible nearby, open it to one of the verses above and read it aloud before you pray.

This prayer also works well shared with a spouse, a roommate or a friend. Read it together over breakfast, then ask each other who you expect to meet that day. You might even pray the shorter version as you walk into work, school or a difficult appointment, asking God to bring compassion to mind at the exact moment it is needed.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who is rich in mercy fill your heart with tenderness before the day begins. May he open your eyes to see the person who needs a kind word, and steady your hands to give help where it is needed. May his compassion go with you from the first hour to the last, and may you be a quiet reminder of his love to everyone you meet today.
